Dr. John Legge, emergency medicine consultant at St. Vincent’s, writing in today’s @IrishTimes about the flawed policy of mandatory hi-vis for vulnerable road users. “It seems that any measure to improve road safety but which may inconvenience drivers cannot be considered.”

The case for 20 mph zones just strengthened 🚸 theguardian.com/commentisfree/… New long-term research from Transport for London shows a 34% reduction in road fatalities and serious injuries after 20 mph limits were introduced, including a 75% drop in child deaths. In Wales, the first year of a 20 mph default limit saw around 100 fewer people killed or seriously injured. Our own work—through projects such as LUSTRE (pacts.org.uk/wp-content/upl…) and the POST briefing "The Impact of 20 mph Speed Limits" (pacts.org.uk/new-report-the…) —confirms that schemes supported by physical traffic-calming measures can cut casualties by up to 40%, compared with around 11% when limits rely solely on signage. Lower speeds save lives, improve safety for all, and do not significantly delay journeys. We await the upcoming Government road safety strategy to see how this evidence is acted upon. #RoadSafety #TransportSafety #20mph #SafeStreets #VisionZero #SpeedReduction #PublicHealth #ActiveTravel #Policy

I applaud Shane Ross for speaking up and out and for his continued personal support behind the scenes all these years later to me and others. I spoke to Shane last week about my total disillusionment with Sean Canney and co and it's great to see someone not afraid to call a spade a spade. He is SPOT ON. I have ZERO faith in the current government on #RoadSafety and call on opposition to try to make waves and improve things, how can this gov regress road safety and no action from others? It can't go on

This article by @GerHerbert1 hits the nail on the head @SeanCanney. We really must act, with a renewed sense of urgency, to protect the lives of our vulnerable road users. The constituents in all of our communities. Our families. Road safety must be above local party politics.🙏🏽

@GerHerbert1 @LorraineFitzsim There’s a section of Tuam Road in Galway city 50kmph where the pedestrian crossings near a bus stops are 300metres in one direction and 350metres in the other direction!! What’s a parent with a buggy and a toddler to do in this situation 🤷‍♂️🤹

Surprised at the animosity toward pedestrians in some of the replies below, complete with the classic dose of victim-blaming. We’re all pedestrians, no matter how we travel - by car, bus, bike - everyone walks somewhere in their day ...
Geraldine Herbert@GerHerbert1

Ireland’s share of pedestrian fatalities is nearly double the European average, making Ireland among the continent’s worst for pedestrian safety...Yet the 30km/h debate still revolves around how motorists will cope 🙄 @PatKennyNT @mcculld

@GerHerbert1 @LorraineFitzsim You are a patient woman Ger. I notice nobody in the replies mentioned the total lack of pedestrians crossing in our urban areas. Expecting older pedestrians or people of lesser mobility to walk an extra 300metre to get to a pedestrian crossing is a ridiculous situation

Totally captivated by this today at the @GalwayIntArts, from David Mach. The skill necessary to create this is just mind boggling, it’s about three metres long, explodes with energy, and blurs the line between chaos and control.

I’m here this morning at my old school, Pope John Paul II National School in Malahide, to mark the launch of the latest Safe Routes to School improvement works. It’s fantastic to see first-hand the changes being made to help children travel to school more safely and sustainably.
