I finally found the speech from Jeffreys which resulted an almighty kick off in 2018 when Pink News misinterpreted her words. So unlike them. It’s p133 of her latest book. What they said she said: “Trans women are parasites”. What she said : “When men claim to be women, I.e members of the oppressor class claim to be oppressed, parasitically occupy the bodies of the oppressed, speak for the oppressed and demand to be recognised as and to enter all sites and discussions set aside for the oppressed, there is no space for women’s liberation, because there no longer exists a class of people to be liberated. Men’s sexual right to be excited by wearing the clothing of, and pretending to be, the oppressed, becomes the focus of what was once a movement for women’s liberation.” She was right then and she’s still right. If anyone thinks they can tell me what she said is wrong. Go right ahead. Don’t just slag her off on hearsay. Refer to her words.

“Rory Stewart is the best prime minister we never had.” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read that sentence, in my texts, in comments sections, after our interviews. Over the last 10 years he’s spoken to me as a Tory leadership contender, Covid canary in the coal mine, independent London mayoral candidate, or, as in this instance, a podcaster and author. His brand of conscientious conservatism beguiles the significant part of our country that is relatively normal and looked on in horror/confusion as the right wing actively attacked Britain and/or descended into explicit bigotry, parochialism, and conspiracy. We spoke about political evil and how it’s often fun to be so, boarding schools, and whether or not we should rewild wolves in Britain. Eclectic and thoughtful. Performative and precise. I think it’s the best episode of The Exchange so far, but it’s Yanis Varoufakis next week and that was pretty good too.
