Someone asked me recently what I would do differently as a parent.
My answer was simple: I will support my child’s vision — especially if it involves building a business.
I may not always see the exact vision they see, but if the idea makes sense after doing some research, I would be willing to fund it and guide them to make sure the money is properly accounted for.
In many Nigerian homes, parents believe their only responsibility is to fund education. Once a child talks about starting a business, the idea is often dismissed or ignored. Why? Because most of our parents grew up in a system where the path was simple: go to school, graduate, and find a job. Anything outside that path feels risky to them.
Another reason is fear. What if the business fails? What if the money is lost?
But I see it differently.
Failure can also be an investment — an investment in experience.
In many developed countries, young people are exposed to work opportunities early in life. While they are still in school, they can earn money, experiment with ideas, and sometimes start small businesses. That early exposure builds confidence, independence, and real-world knowledge.
For me, supporting my child’s dream would simply be another way of empowering them.
Yes, the business might fail. The money might be gone. But what would they gain? Experience, resilience, and lessons that no classroom can teach.
I often remember the story of @mreazi Mr Eazi, who once shared how his uncle supported him with millions of naira for a business that eventually failed. But that experience shaped his journey and helped him become the successful entrepreneur and global artist he is today.
Sometimes what looks like failure is actually preparation.
And sometimes the greatest gift a parent can give a child is not just education — but belief.
