On Wednesday, artist and filmmaker Ali Cherri and the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) filed a complaint in French courts over the Israeli military’s bombing of Cherri’s family apartment in the Mazraa-Barbour area of Beirut on November 26, 2024. The attack occurred just ten hours before the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel took effect, killing seven civilians, including Cherri’s parents.
Based on the digital reconstruction by Forensic Architecture and the documentation by Amnesty International, the complaint emphasizes that the attack on the building was deliberate and holds the Israeli occupation forces responsible for the bombing.
These findings reveal a clear violation of international humanitarian law, which requires distinguishing between military targets and civilian objects. Accordingly, the complaint was filed on the grounds of a war crime consisting of a deliberate attack against a civilian target, an offense punishable under French criminal law.
