I say this as a secular Muslim, with family members who wear hijab, and while staying true to my liberal values: I have no issue with women wearing hijab. I would never tell them what to wear. I understand why they wear it, and I accept their choice. But I will not pretend the hijab fits the concept of a beauty queen. A beauty queen is not only about physical beauty; she is supposed to embody confidence, independence, visibility, and defiance of limitations placed on women. The hijab, by design, conceals. And in many cases, women wear it not purely out of free choice, but because of religious pressure, cultural expectation, family conditioning, or fear of judgment. There is a reason Muslim countries do not crown hijab-wearing beauty queens. Because in those societies, the truly powerful act is not conforming to what others expects from a “good Muslim woman.” It is daring not to conform. A Muslim woman who stands against those expectations and sometimes against outright oppression, is the queen. Not the other way around.
