🙂🙏🏻 Happy to share our recent interview published in American Society of Nephrology ASN Kidney News by Karen Blum on "Refills to Health Advice: AI's Expanding Role Raises Mixed Reactions Among Nephrologists" @KidneyNews @asnpublications kidneynews.org/view/journals/… I, Wisit Cheungpasitporn was honored to contribute and provide perspectives on the rapidly evolving role of artificial intelligence in nephrology. This piece highlights both the promise and the real-world tension: AI can streamline workflows and improve access, but safe kidney care still depends on clinical context, monitoring, and human judgment. In particular, we discuss AI-driven medication refills—where efficiency must be carefully balanced with patient safety, especially for high-risk medications that require ongoing assessment of kidney function, electrolytes, and hemodynamics. Beyond refills, the conversation expands to patient-facing AI tools and the growing reality that many patients are already using these technologies. This shifts our role toward guiding, contextualizing, and partnering with more informed patients. The future is not AI replacing clinicians, but augmenting decision-making, enhancing education, and reshaping how we deliver kidney care—with responsibility at the center. @MayoClinicNeph Read more: kidneynews.org/view/journals/…

🙂 Excited to share our latest lpublication exploring the next frontier of AI in kidney care! "Clinical Artificial Intelligence Agents in Nephrology: From Prediction to Action Through Workflow-Native Intelligence—A Roadmap for Workflow-Integrated Care" 🔗 Read the full article here: doi.org/10.3390/jcm150… 💡 Artificial intelligence in nephrology has historically focused on predictive modeling. However, as clinicians know, prediction alone rarely translates into improved patient care. In this comprehensive review, we propose a critical shift toward clinical AI agents—dynamic systems designed to: 🔹 Move beyond static risk prediction 🔹 Operate seamlessly within native clinical workflows 🔹 Continuously integrate patient data, context, and evolving care needs 🔹 Support real-time clinical reasoning and coordinated action 🔍 Key Contributions & Framework: • A New Paradigm: Introduces a workflow-native AI architecture tailored specifically for nephrology (Perception → Cognition → Planning → Action → Learning). • Clinical Applications: Highlights real-world integration across the care continuum, including CKD management, AKI monitoring, dialysis and CRRT optimization, transplant coordination, and glomerular disease management. • New Metrics for Success: Emphasizes that future AI tools must be evaluated on time-to-action, workflow integration, and clinician oversight—not just isolated model performance. 🎯 The Take-Home Message: The future of AI in kidney care is not just about better prediction—it is about actionable, workflow-integrated intelligence that supports clinicians directly at the point of care. Incredibly grateful to collaborate with outstanding colleagues on advancing this space. I, Wisit Cheungpasitporn, am looking forward to discussions on how we translate these concepts into real-world nephrology practice! 👥 Authors: Charat Thongprayoon, Francesco Pesce, Wisit Cheungpasitporn 🤝 @FrancescoPesce 🔗 Read the full article here: doi.org/10.3390/jcm150… @JCM_MDPI Wisit Cheungpasitporn, MD, FACP, FASN, FAST @MayoClinicNeph Professor of Medicine, Mayo Clinic Advocate for AI in Kidney Care #AIinMedicine #Nephrology #KidneyCare #DigitalHealth #ClinicalDecisionSupport #HealthTech #MachineLearning #MayoClinic #FutureOfMedicine

Happy to share our recent publication in Digital Health! 😊📄 "Generative AI and large language model evaluation of kidney donation websites: Benchmarking health literacy, sentiment, and digital engagement to optimize donor recruitment" 🔗 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/20… Kidney transplantation remains one of the most effective therapies for ESKD, yet severe organ shortages persist. As we continue to advance AI in nephrology, it is crucial that we apply these tools to all aspects of the patient journey and overall kidney care. In this study, we explored a critical but often overlooked barrier: how kidney donation information is presented online. Using a structured evaluation of 27 major U.S. kidney donation websites, combined with a generative AI framework (LLM-based sentiment and tone analysis), here is what we found: 🔹 Readability remains a major challenge: The average reading grade level is ~12.3, with many sites written at a college level. 🔹 Content is solid: Information is generally accurate and neutral-to-positive in tone. 🔹 Digital engagement is limited: There are few interactive tools and minimal personalization. 🔹 Growth potential: Significant opportunities exist to improve inclusivity, accessibility, and patient-centered communication. Importantly, this work demonstrates how artificial intelligence can move beyond clinical prediction into the practical, scalable evaluation of real-world patient education systems. 💡 🎯 The Takeaway: Improving health literacy and digital engagement is not just a communication issue—it is a transplant access and equity issue. AI offers a path to systematically optimize these platforms, potentially increasing donor awareness and transforming the future of kidney care. Incredibly grateful to collaborate with such an outstanding team on this work! 🙏🏻 🔗 Read the full Open Access article here: doi.org/10.1177/205520… 📌 Authors: Benjamin Bizer, Oscar Garcia Valencia, Jose Arriola-Montenegro, Charat Thongprayoon, Jing Miao, Iasmina M.
