Cliques divide people into insiders and outsiders. Healthy groups offer everyone a sense of belonging. It's not enough to be polite. It's critical to convey that we value each member's contribution. The foundation of respect is making sure others feel seen and heard.

Narcissistic leaders are threatened by talent. They want to be the smartest person in the room. Humble leaders are drawn to talent. They surround themselves with people who make them smarter. Great leaders grow talent. They strive to make everyone in the room smarter.

Resilience is not about being invulnerable to hardship. It’s about accepting adversity as part of life. Some struggles are challenges to conquer. Others are weights to carry. Strength doesn’t come from avoiding setbacks. It comes from refusing to be defined by suffering.

We need to be surrounded by people who have the same belief in the power of teaching. This increases our own efficacy, that is, our ability to teach all students!

For a student to really learn something, they have to be able to recognize that they have learned something, and the only way that they are going to do that is by self-assessing their work and reflecting on the outcome.

Claiming the moral high ground is rarely a sign of virtue. It’s often a signal of narcissism. People who consistently believe they hold superior principles have inflated opinions of their own judgment. Being self-righteous is a barrier to respecting and learning from others.

Guide students to develop academic and personal development goals for the new year (providing options and choices)! Once these goals are set, students can share them with their parents or caregivers and display them in the classroom to create an identity-affirming space.

Time doesn't heal psychological wounds. Perspective does. Days passed don't guarantee insight gained. Seeing last year's disappointments through an old lens is more upsetting than viewing yesterday's setbacks from a new angle. Time creates distance. Reflection offers wisdom.
