Often our fear of what has hurt us in the past causes us to build defense mechanisms that hurt others in the very same way. We withhold our affections or concern and believe it will protect us, while actually perpetuating the cycle of pain and fear in the lives of those near us.

When someone insults your character, the first temptation is to dismiss or belittle them... to feel justified and “safe” from their opinion. Don’t. Move rather to empathy—recognize that they are likely operating out of past hurt and fear. See their humanity. Love them instead.

Personal thoughts: Rioting is what happens when fear turns to anger. Shaming that anger will do nothing to solve this; only resolving the fear. Instead of trying to suppress anger, what can we do to address and remove fear?
