Happy Independence Day! Today, we’re celebrating 250 years of America’s history—and the communities that helped shape it. Maryland’s 6th District is truly “America in miniature,” where our nation’s history comes to life—from the Revolutionary War and the C&O Canal to Civil War battlefields and the communities that continue to shape our future. Over the coming weeks, I’ll be highlighting historic sites across the district that tell America’s story. I hope you’ll follow along as we celebrate 250 years of our nation’s history together.

My thoughts are with the families of the two U.S. service members killed in Iran’s attack, and with the loved ones of the service member still missing as they await answers.

Trump dragged America into an illegal war with no congressional authorization, no coherent strategy, and no exit plan to end it. This must end now. Congress must assert its Article I powers regarding declaring war and funding this war.

Six years ago today, we lost Congressman John Lewis, but his legacy lives on. I was honored to join him on his annual pilgrimage to Selma with my husband John—an experience I’ll never forget. We honor him by getting into “good trouble”: defending voting rights, protecting our democracy, and never giving up the fight for justice.

Stay safe out there! Today's AQI across Maryland is above 200 from the smoke from the wildfires raging across Canada, making it very unhealthy to be outside. Everyone should limit their activity outside if they can help it and wear a fitted N95 mask if able to help keep your lungs healthy from the smoke. Seniors, children, pregnant adults, and those with respiratory issues should take extra care to remain inside and away from the smoke.

This is what happens when ideology replaces competence. DOGE cuts weakened our public health infrastructure, Cyclospora reporting became optional, and now cases have spread across 31 states. Americans shouldn't have to worry that reckless political decisions are putting their health at risk.

Nonpartisan, independent assistance from the EAC helps our communities run secure and efficient elections. Firing EAC commissioners just months before the midterm elections is just another step to inject political interference into our democratic processes. When disaster strikes, Americans deserve a President—not a petty politician settling scores. After Western Maryland’s devastating floods, Trump denied FEMA aid to Maryland while neighboring West Virginia received assistance. And now, he’s doing it again!
