I'm so grateful that the immediate threat to our communities has been lifted. I cannot begin to express my gratitude to the OC Fire Authority and every first responder, who continue to work tirelessly to keep our community safe. We must now begin the work of recovery and accountability to ensure that this crisis can never happen again.

UPDATE: The remaining 16,000 residents who have been evacuated because of the Garden Grove hazmat incident may return to their homes effective 7:30 PM PST. UPDATE: I have invited GKN Aerospace leadership to attend my community meeting for residents impacted by the hazmat crisis tomorrow. Our community is rightfully angry and frightened about the chaos and disruption this crisis has caused. GKN must answer directly to the families and small business owners who have been impacted.

Our community is rightfully angry and, now that the threat has been reduced, our work will immediately prioritize demanding accountability from all responsible actors. I’ll continue working with local, state, and federal partners to ensure our residents get the answers and relief they deserve.

UPDATE: I have been briefed by OCFA that the evacuation area has been reduced and 65 percent of evacuees will be able to return home imminently. I encourage everyone to follow the updated guidance and avoid the updated evacuation zone. While there remains an immediate potential risk in that updated zone, the work of the OC Fire Authority is moving in the right direction. I am grateful for the tireless efforts of the OC Fire Authority, local police, and emergency response professionals to mitigate this crisis and keep our community safe.

TOMORROW: Due to the ongoing toxic chemical emergency in Garden Grove, I will be holding a Community Meeting at CSUF Titan Student Union (800 N State College Blvd, Fullerton, CA 92831) from 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM Tuesday, May 26, in place of my previously scheduled town hall to discuss potential options for recourse and resources to address displacement and financial burden due to the “Western Incident.”
Doors will open at 3:30 PM, followed by a Q&A from 4:00 PM to 4:30 PM with me, followed by opportunities to speak with consumer protection professionals and learn more about resources available to you. While the risk of a catastrophic explosion is over, an explosion or chemical leak is still possible. Threats to public safety remain. Please listen to local authorities and follow evacuation orders.

Due to the threat of the BLEVE being eliminated, Fire & Law are re-evaluating the evacuation zones. Please do NOT enter the evacuation zones at this time. A press conference with more details will be at 6 pm at the Incident Command Post in Los Alamitos.

At my urging, President Trump has signed California's request for a Federal Emergency Declaration to support emergency response to the ongoing crisis in Garden Grove. I've been working around the clock to make sure that our community has the federal resources we need to solve the immediate crisis and help displaced families. I'm urging President Donald Trump to approve California's request for a Federal Emergency Declaration in response to the ongoing toxic chemical incident, known as the “Western Incident,” at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove, California. The severity of this disaster requires additional coordination and federal support. The safety, security, and well-being of evacuated residents and the surrounding communities remain my absolute highest priority.

UPDATE: I have been informed by the Orange County Fire Authority that while there is still a potential risk to the immediate area, substantial progress to cool down the tank was made overnight by the heroic work of OCFA personnel and all partners. We anticipate, with this good news, that impacted residents will be able to return home, but before they do, it is critical that local authorities deem this area absolutely safe.
