Friday in the First David Ray is a resident of Lewiston Woodville and a devoted pastor at Growing Together Ministry Worldwide. His contributions span multiple roles, including ministering to offenders and leading vital food ministries, educational programs, and community support initiatives. Every two weeks, David provides food boxes to over 500 individuals across several towns. He has also established an online university, attracting students both locally and globally, and has initiated community education initiatives. David's commitment to youth engagement is evident through his involvement in after-school programs, youth education, and recreational activities for children. In addition to these efforts, he passionately advocates for local community improvements, such as establishing a small grocery store to combat food insecurity. David's impactful work resonates far beyond his community, reaching throughout eastern North Carolina and beyond. The birthdays that will not be celebrated. The chair that sits empty. The voice that will never be heard again. Freedom is not free, and Gold Star families live that truth every single day. Congress must listen to the voices of the families of military servicemembers killed in action and pass the Honor and Remember Flag Recognition Act (H.R. 1363).

An estimated 15,000 farms closed this past year, and farmers in eastern North Carolina are feeling real pressure. Rising fertilizer and fuel costs, tighter margins, drought, and uncertainty are putting strain on the people who feed and clothe us. A Farm Bill matters for our farmers and our region. While not perfect, the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026 (H.R. 7567) provides necessary support: expanding access to risk management tools, opening new markets through trade promotion, strengthening support for specialty crop growers, and improving access to credit and loans. I didn't just vote for this bill; I helped shape it, rolling in six bills I introduced, an amendment, and more than 25 measures I've supported. While I'll keep working to make it stronger, we can't afford to fall short because too much is at stake for eastern North Carolina.

We must always remember the families who carry the cost of freedom every single day. Gold Star families have given more than most of us can ever imagine. Their sacrifice deserves to be seen, honored, and remembered; not just in words, but in action. The Honor and Remember Flag is a powerful symbol to ensure their sacrifice is never forgotten.

For young adults leaving foster care, taking the next step can be the toughest part. That’s why the new Thrive Independent Living duplexes in Middlesex are so important: they provide not just housing but also stability, support, and a real path forward, because every young person deserves the chance to stand on their own and succeed.

Strong workforce. Strong communities. At the NCWorks Career Center Kerr-Tar Young Adult Hiring event, students from across our region connected with employers and discovered real opportunities right here at home.

For students in Halifax County, opportunity is closer to reach. A new partnership between Halifax Community College and East Carolina University is creating a direct career advancement pathway for Dental Hygiene graduates. We’re nurturing local talent, strengthening our healthcare system, and ensuring communities have the care they need.

This morning on Capitol Hill, With Honor Action joined @BipartisanVets Co-Chair @RepDonDavis, caucus member @RepTomBarrett, @RepGusBilirakis, and @GruntStyleFdn to call on Congress to act on the bipartisan Written Informed Consent Act. The bill ensures the VA provides clear, written disclosure of risks before prescribing high-risk medications, giving veterans the information they need to make informed decisions and advocate for their care. Our veterans deserve full transparency, stronger safeguards, and the ability to take control of their own health decisions.

Our veterans deserve transparency. They should never be left in the dark when it comes to their health care decisions. Veterans must receive clear notice about their medications so they can make the most informed choices for themselves and their families. That’s why Congress must pass the Written Informed Consent Act (H.R. 4837).

Military families who were exposed to toxins at Camp Lejeune stepped up to serve our country. Now, it’s time to give them the support and action they truly deserve.

Keeping electricity affordable for families and small businesses isn’t optional; it’s essential. That’s why it’s a top priority for the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. Great to see familiar faces from eastern North Carolina in Washington, D.C., and have real conversations about lowering costs and strengthening our rural communities.

Rising costs, unpredictable markets, and real uncertainty about the future are squeezing farmers, and it’s not just a farm issue. It’s a food security, economic, and community issue. That’s why I’ve been working to get key provisions from my legislation included in the Farm Bill. We must deliver real relief, strengthen rural economies, and support the people who feed our nation. ▪️H.R. 1858, Flooding Prevention, Assessment, and Restoration Act, would empower communities to restore flood protection in watersheds to levels above pre-disaster conditions through the NRCS Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) Program—a federal initiative for emergency recovery. The bill also directs the USDA to conduct a comprehensive national study of agricultural flood vulnerability. This study will provide vital insights into flood risks on agricultural lands, equipping producers with actionable data to make informed decisions and implement effective mitigation strategies. ▪️H.R. 2109, Cybersecurity for Rural Water Systems Act, would allow the USDA Circuit Rider Program to provide cybersecurity technical assistance to rural water systems. ▪️H.R. 1985, the Promoting Precision Agriculture Act, would establish a partnership between the federal government and the private sector to create voluntary interconnectivity standards. ▪️H.R. 6385, Farm Transitions Act of 2025, would reauthorize the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Commission on Farm Transitions and require the Commission to deliver a comprehensive set of policy recommendations to Congress within two years, focusing on ensuring that next-generation farmers have access to the land, resources, and support needed to keep family farms strong for the future.
