Justice Elena Kagan, in a sharp dissent joined by the Court’s other liberal justices, warned that the ruling weakens protections against racial discrimination in voting—arguing it allows states to dilute minority voting power “without legal consequence.” She described the decision as part of a broader trend that has steadily eroded key provisions of the Voting Rights Act since 2013. While the Court did not overturn the law entirely, the ruling could have significant consequences. Louisiana is now likely to lose a Democratic-leaning district, and other states may revisit their own maps amid ongoing redistricting battles.
