At the 55th Anniversary commemoration of Bloody Sunday last year, John Lewis told us to “Speak up. Speak out. Get in the way. Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America.” It is long past time to fully restore the Voting Rights Act.

Today marks the 56th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, the first without my friend John Lewis.  Today, we honor John and the brave Americans who marched across that bridge in Selma, facing tear gas and billy clubs, for the right to vote—a struggle that continues to this day.

The number of households with food insecure children has doubled - from 14% to 28% - during the pandemic. This is unconscionable. This National Nutrition Month, let us recommit to ensuring no child goes hungry in one of the world’s wealthiest nations.

This Women’s History Month, let us reflect on these words from Ohio native Toni Morrison, the first African American to win the Nobel Prize for literature: “The function of freedom is to free someone else.” #WHM

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd died while a police officer knelt on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. Nine months later, it is past time we address systemic racial profiling and police brutality. That’s why I just voted to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

I just voted to pass the American Rescue Plan. From stimulus checks and vaccine funding, to money that allows our schools to safely reopen, this package will deliver relief to the hardest hit Americans, help defeat the virus, and set us on the road to economic recovery.

I just voted for the Equality Act to prohibit discrimination against LGBTQ Americans. Every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of who they are or whom they love.

On this day in 1870, Hiram Revels became the first African American to serve in Congress after he was appointed to fill the Senate seat once occupied by Jefferson Davis. Since Sen. Revels, only 10 other African Americans have served in the U.S. Senate. #BlackHistoryMonth

This pandemic has exacerbated long-standing racial disparities in America. Black, Hispanic and Native Americans are more likely to become infected and die from COVID. Addressing these disparities starts with ensuring vaccines are allocated equitably in our communities.

The Biden-Harris Administration has made critical changes to the Paycheck Protection Program to ensure very small and minority-owned businesses can access the relief they need. For a two week period beginning tomorrow, certain small businesses can apply for assistance.

We have now surpassed the grim milestone of 500,000 lives lost to COVID-19. More than an unimaginable statistic, each death marks an empty space in our communities – a parent, sibling, friend, neighbor or colleague. Today, we remember those we have lost to this terrible disease.

On this day in 1962, John Glenn was launched into space aboard the Friendship 7, becoming the first American to orbit the earth. The trip was made possible in part by NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson, who calculated the orbit and re-entry of Glenn’s capsule—by hand. #BHM
