Sadie Tanner Alexander was a civil rights activist from Philadelphia. She was the first African American woman to earn a Ph.D in Economics and to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. In 1946, she was appointed by Pres. Truman to his Committee on Civil Rights.

Marian Anderson broke racial barriers with her voice. In 1939, she was denied from performing at Constitution Hall in D.C. She went on to perform a concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Anderson was a civil rights advocate and delegate to the UN Human Rights Committee.
