Trump's war in Iran isn't just increasing your gas prices. When fertilizer prices go up, so do your grocery bills. This administration doesn't care about lowering your cost of living.

Some big changes are in the works along part of Interstate 65 and Maxwell Boulevard in Montgomery, all thanks to new federal funding. #Echobox=1773185101" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">waka.com/2026/03/10/u-s…

The State of Alabama is going to execute Charles "Sonny" Burton on Thursday. He's 75 now, in a wheelchair, and wears a helmet due to constant falls. One would think that he must've killed someone. But, he didn't kill anyone or even attempt to kill anyone. He wasn't even in the building at the time of the murder. And the person who actually did commit murder didn't even get a death sentence. I have talked to the governor's office and sent a letter pleading with Gov. Ivey to stop this execution. This is the same ask being made by attorneys, faith leaders, civil rights advocates, government officials, jurors from Mr. Burton's trial, and most importantly, a daughter of the victim, Doug Battle. Please do the right thing, Gov. Ivey!

This weekend, I told a story how Selma had all the right ingredients in 1965 to bake a cake of freedom, justice, and equality. Each ingredient served a specific purpose. All of the leaders and foot soldiers of the Civil Rights Movement - those who fought, bled and died for a better life for future generations all played a specific role. We honored their commitment and sacrifice, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to carry the torch forward toward freedom.

In what the FBI said was a conspiracy to kill civil rights workers, Bernard LaFayette was beaten outside his home and had a gun pointed at him on the same night Medgar Evers was killed. When his neighbor came to his defense with a gun, LaFayette pleaded with his neighbor to not kill the man who was likely about to kill him. Bernard LaFayette was one of the key organizers, not just of the Selma voting rights effort, but of the entire Civil Rights Movement. He is one of the reasons I am in Congress today. LaFayette was a Freedom Rider, for which he was beaten in Montgomery and thrown in prison in Mississippi. He would go on to stand side by side with other legends of the Movement on the front lines of the pursuit of equal treatment and opportunity for all people, risking his life routinely in forcing America to acknowledge and address the evils of oppression of Black and poor people. I hate to hear of his passing, but I am forever grateful for his contributions and legacy.

President Trump started a war with Iran without congressional approval and without a plan to address the fallout. American soldiers have already tragically died. Congress has a responsibility to ensure that the President does not force us further into this conflict, with no clear objective or timeline, resulting in the loss of more American troops.

Not a Republican, not a Democrat, has said that it is their goal to eliminate the SNAP program. At a bare minimum, we can ensure that the SNAP programs are not eliminated in states across this country if they do not meet the cost share. Adding my amendment to the Farm Bill, providing states with SNAP funding they would be guaranteed, does not cost the federal government a single extra penny more than what it would already be on the hook for if the state did meet the cost share.

I am saddened to learn of the deaths of three U.S. service members who were killed during the strikes on Iran, and I send my condolences to their families. Their courage and sacrifice will not be forgotten. Too many lives have already been lost in this conflict, and we need to end it. We need to get our troops back home. Please pray for the safety of our military and the innocent civilians in harm's way.

The President has America on the brink of war, and is doing so again without Congressional approval. Using our military to seek a regime change is war. Period. Congress - and only Congress - has the authority to declare war under our Constitution.

#BlackHistoryMonth Today, I honor my father, Michael A. Figures. Born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, he was a trailblazer in Alabama’s legal and political communities. A graduate of Stillman College, Figures was part of a group of Black students that integrated the University of Alabama’s Law School in 1969, and in 1972, he was one of three Black students to earn a law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law, the first Black students to do so. Figures returned home to Mobile to practice law and was elected to the Alabama State Senate in 1978, becoming one of the first three post-Reconstruction Black state senators in Alabama. As a lawyer and legislator, he helped to reform Mobile’s local form of government, resulting in the formation of the current Mayor-City Council format, which established city council districts that allowed for Black representation in city government for the first time. In 1987, Figures filed a lawsuit that bankrupted the KKK after a $7 million verdict for the 1981 lynching of Michael Donald in Mobile, a pivotal victory for justice. Figures rose to become the first Black President Pro-Tempore of the Alabama State Senate, which is still the highest position held by an African American in the history of the State of Alabama. He served in the Alabama Senate until his sudden death in 1996. I am proud to carry on my father’s legacy alongside my brothers and my mother, Sen. Vivian Davis Figures.

#BlackHistoryMonth Today, we honor @RepTerriSewell, a proud daughter of Selma and a champion for Alabama’s 7th Congressional District. She made history as the first Black valedictorian of Selma High School before earning degrees from Princeton University and Oxford University, and her law degree from Harvard Law School. She later became the first Black woman partner at a major Birmingham law firm. Now serving her eighth term, Rep. Sewell is the first and only Black woman ever elected to represent Alabama in Congress. She sits on the United States House Committee on Ways and Means, where she works to protect Social Security, strengthen health care, and expand economic opportunities for Alabama families. From launching annual job fairs and Project R.E.A.D.Y. to securing critical federal investments for the Black Belt, she has consistently delivered results. Rep. Sewell also led the effort to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the victims of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing and to the Foot Soldiers of the Voting Rights Movement, honoring the legacy of those who paved the way. Rooted in the lessons of her parents, Nancy Gardner Sewell and Coach Andrew A. Sewell, her leadership is defined by service and unwavering commitment to her community.
