Police Week is a time to support local law enforcement and honor those we've lost in the line of duty. Among those I met this week was Chris, the father of Officer Austin Machitar, a fallen San Diego Police Department officer who made the ultimate sacrifice one year ago. His story was a powerful reminder of why this week matters so much. To every officer out there: Thank you for all that you do.

To wrap up #NationalPoliceWeek, I had the pleasure of showing San Diego law enforcement and their families around the Capitol. It was not only a great opportunity to make their trip to DC special, but to thank them for their service and dedication to keeping our community safe.

Using tear gas and pepper spray on innocent, young children is unconscionable. Instead of borrowing another $70 billion to finance more of this cruelty, Congress should pass my Stop Excessive Force in Immigration Act to ensure this dangerous equipment is only used against genuine threats to public safety, not our children.

San Diego is home to some of the bravest men and women in uniform. In Congress, I take that seriously. That's why I voted to fund veteran housing and mental health care programs, critical infrastructure at our military bases, and new barracks and child development centers. Congress should invest in the military community the way they've invested in us.

My office is handling more immigration casework requests right now than at any point in all my years in Congress. USCIS is failing the people it's supposed to serve, especially DACA recipients in my district who are watching their status and livelihoods hang in the balance.   They did everything right. The system is letting them down.

The War Powers Resolution reaffirms the Constitutional authority that only Congress has the power to declare war. It’s past time for my Republican colleagues to stand up for the Constitution and hold the President accountable. 4/4

The Trump Administration has still not proved that we faced an imminent threat from Iran. Even worse, the administration has failed to achieve any of its stated objectives: ending Iran’s nuclear ambitions, removing its highly enriched uranium, or regime change. 3/4

This week we learned that inflation is higher than it’s been in years - outpacing wage gains. Yet President Trump admitted he is not thinking about Americans’ financial situation even a little bit. The American people deserve better.

For the second year in a row, homelessness has decreased in San Diego. This is encouraging news, but more must be done to ensure every person has a safe, secure, affordable place to sleep every night.
