Over the past week, gas prices have risen by more than 50 cents per gallon on average nationwide. Last month, gas cost $2.90 a gallon, but today the nationwide average is $3.48 for regular gas and $4.66 for diesel. Overnight, the price of oil hit more than $100 a barrel for the first time since Russia’s attack on Ukraine in 2022.Donald Trump promised to lower the high cost of living on day one. Today, it is day 33 of the partial government shutdown to fund DHS. Let's be clear: DHS isn't going anywhere but that doesn't mean it shouldn't change. What happened to Alex Pretti, Renee Good, and most recently, Mohammed Nazeer Pktiawal, is unacceptable. Americans want accountability. Reforms like requiring ICE officials to show their identity are not extreme. Let's reopen DHS -- but I am demanding better.

Last week, I visited the ICE Processing Center in Dallas and was assured that individuals are generally not held there for longer than eight hours except in rare circumstances. Today, I learned that Mohammed Nazeer Paktiawal—an Afghan father who once served alongside the United States—died Friday night after being held at that same facility. No family should ever have to learn that their loved one died while in government custody. Mr. Paktiawal’s death raises serious and urgent questions. I am demanding a full and transparent investigation and immediate answers from ICE and the Department of Homeland Security about the circumstances surrounding his death.
