Former Army JAG here. No quarter orders are a violation of the law of war and Geneva conventions. This is the same order reportedly given during the Caribbean boat strikes. @SecWar is establishing a pattern of issuing illegal orders. I’ve trained hundreds of soldiers on the law of war — our service members have an obligation to follow that law.

Reopening the federal government is long overdue. The Senate passed this bipartisan bill over a month ago, and I encouraged @SpeakerJohnson and the House GOP to back it from the beginning. Instead, they held federal workers’ pay hostage and refused to negotiate, only to pass the same agreement in the end.

Today, I voted “no” on the Farm Bill because it would make life more difficult for farmers and families.    Instead of providing meaningful relief to rural communities, House Republicans have brought forward a bill that prioritizes large corporations over our nation’s producers.    As a member of the House Agriculture Committee, I remain committed to standing up for Virginia’s farmers.

Today, SCOTUS dealt a devastating blow to one of America's most hard-won civil rights achievements. By rendering Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act effectively unenforceable, the court has invited states to systematically dilute minority voting power with impunity. Congress must respond by bringing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to the floor without delay.
