The stick on farfetchd was introduced for that reason to compliment slash and it's other setup moves
Won't catch me dead using it in comp but for ingame Kanto that mons deceptively good while still being able to farm crits

Although I do feel like they might had already noticed the inconsistency with the system they were using (Hoenn Special lmao) and could even have thought of changing it before Gen4
I think Sneasel is a terrible example since most of it's level up moves were physical

I can think of a few gen 1 mons that kept/developed a solid identity afterward bc of things they received in later games

@DetectivEsse like, i think the biggest example of this has to be electrode. nothing about that pokemon makes sense anymore because every mechanic it was designed around got removed from the game lol.
