Watched the 2001 anime film Metropolis for the first time in over a decade. It's often mistaken as an anime remake of the 1927 Metropolis silent film, but is largely its own thing which manages to be a beautiful tribute to both Fritz Lang and Osamu Tezuka. Every frame of this film is absolutely stunning. It's the kind of animated work you'll want to watch multiple times because there will inevitably be small details you'll miss the first go around. From the highly detailed backgrounds to the fluid movements of the characters, Metropolis fully succeeds with painting a living, breathing world. Its fantastic jazz soundtrack adds to the retro feel, which contrasts nicely with the narrative's futuristic themes of advancing technology. Indeed, 25 years on from its release at the turn of the century, we're still having the same debates on if man will be replaced by machine. With ethical discussions around the uses of AI constantly in the headlines, Metropolis's central conflict between human beings and robots feels especially palpable now. If there are any flaws, it's that I've always found the protagonist Kenichi to be a little bland, while at times there's arguably more emphasis on visual splendor over a deep script. Still, that's not enough to stop Metropolis from being one of the most memorable science fiction films I've ever seen and a gorgeous work of timeless art. You shouldn't view it as a remake of the Fritz Lang film. Tezuka's original manga didn't have anything to do with it and the story was quite different from what's shown here. I prefer to instead view Metropolis (2001) as a love letter to the sci-fi masters who came before. It's made by people with great respect for the past and cautious optimism for the future.
