Another way of motivating participation is giving the trial participants a small amount of tokens in the DAO or project conducting the research. If the project does make it to commercialization, these tokens might guarantee a share of the royalties.

Every officer in the countless sickening videos we're seeing from around the US of unprovoked police attacks on protestors knows that there are dozens of citizen cameras trained on them. They behave this way when they know everyone is watching. They think they have permission.

Luckily, there's many categories of ethereum applications (and other chains) that go beyond finance. Decentralized censorship-resistant publishing and communication, decentralized communities / governance / DAOs, DAOs for content curation, etc etc. All important work.
