Last week, we partnered with Resilience Action Network Africa (RANA) to bring together civil society organizations from 11 African countries in Nairobi to collaborate on a shared advocacy agenda for epidemic preparedness, with a focus on collaborative surveillance, the practice of using real-time data to make decisions related to outbreak detection and response. At the end of the two-day bootcamp, participating organizations adopted the Nairobi Declaration on African Health Security and Collaborative Disease Surveillance, which urges African governments, regional institutions, and development partners to treat epidemic preparedness and collaborative disease surveillance as urgent priorities, emphasizing their role in economic and security stability. They left with clear next steps to elevate and operationalize the declaration at the national and subnational level. They also made a commitment to build a regional platform that advances Africa-led collaborative surveillance priorities with political leaders, technical institutions, and donors. Thank you to our partners and participants for a productive and inspiring session that will help civil society organizations build more resilient health security systems in Africa.

Today is World #HandHygiene Day—a reminder that good hand hygiene keeps health care workers, patients and their families safe. Many avoidable infections acquired in health care settings could be prevented with hand hygiene and other infection prevention and control (IPC) measures—yet health care workers are not always equipped with the tools and resources they need. Countries and health leaders can strengthen IPC to create safer and more effective health care systems. Learn more: who.int/campaigns/worl…

Last month, we partnered with Ethiopia's Ministry of Health to bring together national health leaders for a critical meeting on tackling noncommunicable diseases (NCDs)—conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke that claim millions of lives each year. Our team is supporting this technical working group as they update Ethiopia's national NCD strategy, sharpening care guidelines and aligning with global health standards. Through this work, they're breaking down silos and uniting partners around a single, coordinated plan so that progress at the national level reaches communities across the country.

High blood pressure is a leading cause of death worldwide, even though it’s both preventable and treatable. Dr. Renu Garg, our Senior Vice President for Cardiovascular Health, recently spoke with Jenny Lei Ravelo from @devex about the mismatch between the global burden of high blood pressure and the attention it receives. The article outlines some of the ways countries and funders can improve blood pressure control, including improvements to primary health care, a reliable supply of free and accessible blood pressure medicines, and preventive policy measures that create healthier food environments. In 2025, malaria cases appeared in El Salvador, putting the country’s hard-earned malaria-free status at risk. Thankfully, health officials were prepared. They deployed a high-speed, cross-sector coordination strategy and contained 113 cases with no deaths. Watch our new video to learn how they did it.
