Facial reconstruction of the 1,900-year-old Osterby Man from Germany Osterby Man is a “bog mummy”: the skull of a man who died in the middle of the 1st century CE and was discovered in a peat bog southeast of the village of Osterby (in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein). On May 26, 1948, brothers Otto and Max Müller were cutting peat in a bog near Osterby when, at a depth of about 70 cm, they discovered a human head separated from the body and wrapped in a shoulder cape made of roe deer skins. Research showed that the skull belonged to a man who died at the age of 50–60. The most interesting feature of the find is the exceptionally well-preserved hairstyle. The ancient man’s hair had been arranged above the right temple and tied in the so-called “Suebian knot.” According to the ancient Roman historian Tacitus, men of the Suebi tribe wore exactly the same hairstyle. Due to oxidation, his hair turned a bright red color, though microscopic examination showed that at the time of death the Osterby man had been dark blond with some white hairs. From marks on the second vertebra, scientists determined that the head had been severed from the body with some kind of sharp weapon. On the left side of the skull there remained a mark (12 cm in diameter) from a blunt object that fractured the bone. It is likely that this skull injury caused his death. The Osterby Man skull is exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Gottorf Castle. The mandible, attached by Karl Schlabow, may belong to another individual rather than Osterby Man, as suggested by some recent research. The facial reconstruction was made using that same attached mandible.
