people are quick to assume women who put down “nice guys” just have terrible taste in men, and that’s definitely true for some. but i think there’s another thing going on too. especially after a bad breakup or divorce, people often end up seeking stability at the expense of most other factors (intellectual chemistry, shared sense of humor, etc.), and then are disappointed to find that overindexing on “safety” has left them with romantic options whose only real, defining characteristic is just “being nice.” hence the nice, bland stepdad trope. people just have to guard against overcorrecting.
