My siblings and I took our Mom to brunch yesterday to celebrate Mother's Day. For three years of my life she was a single mom, and for most of their lives. The sacrifices she made, the emotional strain she carried, the strength and grit she demonstrated to raise us is just part of what makes her our hero. She was not perfect, no one is, but what we all remember were the tireless ways she loved us, fought for us, and encouraged us. I have a file folder of notes she wrote over the years that blessed me. Now, it is harder for her to write, so she sends text messages with lots of heart emojis and I love you's. When I look at LaVon, my wife and best friend, I see all the ways she has done these same things for our daughters and granddaughter, and for me. Today we celebrate moms, and the mother figures in our lives (grandmothers, aunts, others) who loved us, believed in us, encouraged us and made us who we are today. The photo is of our family from Easter of this year. All but five people in this photo, would not be alive were it not for my Mom (at the center in the photo) and all of our lives have been shaped and enriched by her love. Happy Mother's Day, Mom!

Tomorrow (Sunday) is Mother's Day! Join us for worship; we'll celebrate the important women in our lives, and return to the tradition of the very first Mother's Day (started in a Methodist Church) of giving white carnations to all the women. In the message we'll begin and end with moms, and in between study what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount about money and worry. Invite the important women in your life and join us for worship.

This weekend in worship, I'll be focusing on The Lord's Prayer. It is the most prayed prayer in the world. Early Christians prayed it three times a day. Every word and phrase is rich in meaning. And this prayer, taught by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, has the power to change your life. I will be preaching through May, finishing the Sermon on the Mount sermon series, then stepping back from preaching. This will be one of my last four sermons until after the election - all focused on The Sermon on the Mount.

Thank you to everyone who's reached out over the past two months as I have been exploring a run for the US Senate. Tomorrow morning (Thursday) LaVon and I will share our decision with you! I'm so grateful for the opportunity to hear from so many of you, and for your prayers and support throughout this process!

Ever wonder what your purpose is? There are plenty of ways to define it. Jesus gave us two pictures of this in the Sermon on the Mount: You are the salt of the earth and you are the light of the world. He said we're to be a "city on a hill that can't be hidden." This section from the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:13-16) has been quoted by presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Obama. We'll also look at how to make sense of several of the hardest sayings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. Join us! And a PS - I'm really excited - we're confirming over 200 youth today as they profess their faith in Christ and commit to being salt and light.

Today is National Administrative Professionals Day! We have an amazing team of Administrative Professionals at Resurrection. Their ministry impacts the entire congregation and all the work we do outside the walls of the church as well. Stephanie Hubers is my Executive Assistant and I would be lost without her. She has a deep faith, a heart for the church and for people and she is excellent at what she does. Thank you to all Administrative Professionals!!!

This weekend we begin a five week study of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. John RW Stott described it as, "probably the best-known part of the teaching of Jesus… it is the nearest thing to a manifesto that he ever uttered, for it is his own description of what he wanted his followers to be and to do." We'll start where Jesus started, with the Beatitudes in Matthew 5:3-12. Join us for worship as we consider the Beatitudes and "The Pursuit of Happiness."

This Saturday, I will be at our final two listening sessions as we consider a run for the US Senate. At 9 am I’ll be at the Kansas City Kansas Main Library. Then at 11, I’ll be at Limitless Brewing on 95th Street in Lenexa. I’ll share a brief introduction and why I am considering this run and what I would hope to accomplish if elected, then spend most of my time listening to your concerns - what you hope for for our country and from your next Senator. This week, my new book, The Holy Spirit: God's Presence and Power at Work in Us begins shipping. I am really excited about this little book! It is being released in anticipation of Pentecost, that churches and individuals will read and study it in preparation for, or following Pentecost Sunday - May 24. In the book I take readers through a study of Scripture in order to hear and understand what the Bible teaches us about the Holy Spirit, then I illustrate that with experiences from 38 years of ministry. I close the book sharing the experiences of some of the over 1,000 people I surveyed about the Holy Spirit's work in their lives. When we are attentive to the Spirit's leading and intentionally open to the Spirit's power we experience a qualitatively different Christian life. The book is available from Amazon and other bookstores, but Cokesbury appears to have the earliest shipping - shipping this week.

Christ is risen!!! I love this day. In Christ’s resurrection, love vanquishes hate, hope defeats despair, life conquers death! Alleluia!
