Today we look back 50 years ago when the youth of South Africa rose up against the injustice of apartheid, the center of that uprising was the mother of all townships and black life, Soweto. The youth of the day who had seen how the system of apartheid had abused and dehumanised their parents refused to be subjected to being taught in the oppressors language. As much as the fight was stoked by Afrikaans being imposed as the medium of learning in black schools, the youth of 1976 were fighting a broader struggle, the struggle against apartheid itself. A system that sought to render the black person a pariah and a sub human in their own land. The youth had seen the evil regime arrest their hero’s, ban the African National Congress which was their political home, rape and subjugate black women to the peripheries of society and render black men non beings in their country of birth with the labour migrant movement. The youth of 1976 fought not to be superior to any race but to be treated equally like other races. The youth of 1976 remind us how far we have come as a society in dealing with the remnants of apartheid, we have seen the ANC government create non fee paying schools, a social welfare system that protects the lives of young people, A school nutrition system in place so that learners do not learn on empty stomachs and the introduction of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, which has funded millions of young people from poor backgrounds, indeed much needs to be done but we have come a long way. As we honour the lives of Hector Pietersen, Murphy Morobe, Tsietsi Mashinini, Hastings Ndlovu, Seth Mazibuko and many other young lives who fell in Soweto, KwaLanga, Athlone we remember their revolutionary spirits and continue to better the lives of the youth of South Africa. Let Freedom Reign✊🏽
