"I’m searching for a spirituality that takes difference seriously, one that remains differentiated through encounter, one that nurtures a posture toward difference that is not inherently tribal, defensive, or insecure." - @RevSethRich Read more: bit.ly/3KUXGaT

Searching for “hopeful realism” … first part in a series where I’m trying to flesh out a responsive, practicable faith that integrates contemplative spirituality and political theology (but not in those top-shelf terms). Over at @missioalliance missioalliance.org/searching-for-…

Someone sent me this question and it’s got me thinking. I’m not sure I have a label for my own political theology or one single book or article that captures it.

@RevSethRich I saw this at the top of my feed, then scrolled down a few posts and someone else had posted the clip. What an odd story - never in my years of being single or married has a woman ever approached me and offered to buy me a drink or anything else of the sort.

I won’t subtweet but you’ve seen it: the clip of male pastor telling story of being propositioned by a woman at a bar while his wife was out of town … I wish I were more shocked/surprised by his story or THAT he would tell this story … 1/

I talk frequently about how discourses (i.e. the words/stories deployed about ourselves/others and how we tell them) are a key ingredient in the mix that sustains structures of domination, beyond and beneath any individual’s intentions … this is a GREAT example 6/6

Not only are these stories disconnected from reality, not only do they reinforce destructive/dangerous/dehumanizing assumptions about women’s bodies, they underwrite and perpetuate hierarchical male-centric structures … 5/

In summary: we need space for analysis on multiple levels, simultaneously, but especially on the level of social-religious histories/systems/dynamics (this is the one that gets eclipsed, normally) ... in order to unwind both Asbury revival and other places of tension we face /7

Another example: almost parallel to the revival is an earthquake in Turkey/Syria that has killed 41,000+ people. We can ask, "what theological logic allows for divine intervention for spiritual consolation but not for children crushed by buildings?" w/out critical judgment /6

The Asbury revival dialogue reveals something deeper about how evang-ism functions: There isn't space for affirming multiple things at once. The horizon of analysis collapses in on itself, which limits the ability to *see* the spectrum of what the Spirit is disrupting/renewing /1
