@RevSnow67

Not really a minor sitcom character. Not really a cleric. Just a bundle of informed opinions.

1. Details matter. 2. Do the math. 3. Few people are lying, but nearly everyone is wrong.

@TSHamiltonAstro @d4nnytye The key is that something complex has essentials and lesser details. A strong understanding lets someone choose correctly what simplifications are still worth telling.

@None1683191 @politicalmath Whatever forces dictated that Harris would take the baton in 2024. I believe those same forces brought the hammer down on those contesting Biden.

@None1683191 @politicalmath The point of disagreement is that I do not believe that Steyer, Buttigieg, and Klobuchar all reached the same decision to quit within hours of each other without coordination and arm twisting.

The Obama-Clinton primary of 2008 was the last time I felt like Democratic voters were given a real choice in their nominee In 2016, the party apparatus cleared the field for Hillary & Bernie was the protest vote In 2020, they cleared the field for Biden, even though the base was lukewarm on him In 2024, they screwed their base by installing Harris as the nominee 2028 might actually *mean* something. It might actually tell us what the Dem base does when they have a choice

@None1683191 @politicalmath You didn't find it strange when three competitors dropped out just in time for Biden's defining win in SC?

The aim is to discredit the Court among people who won’t look up the details. It’s no different than what Trump does, and those who do it should be regarded in the same way.

As expected, this is a crazy filing. Virginia makes two arguments in support of its request for an emergency stay. 1. It contends that the state supreme court's interpretation of the Virginia constitution is "predicated ... on a grave misreading of federal law." But the court merely cited a Supreme Court case as informative on, and supportive of, the general meaning of "election." This comes nowhere close to meeting the high bar of showing that the court ruled on a federal question. 2. Invoking the narrow exception left open in Moore v. Harper (2023), it contends that the court's ruling so “transgressed the ordinary bounds of judicial review such that it arrogated to itself the power vested in the state legislature to regulate federal elections.” But no justice is going to find the court's ruling manifestly bonkers. Look for this stay application to be denied without any dissent.

BREAKING: Dem officials in Virginia ask #SCOTUS to put hold on state Supreme Court ruling nullifying redistricting referendum. VA argues that its high court is in conflict w/fed law (& Trump position) on what's Election Day & intruded on legislature. Doc: documentcloud.org/documents/2811…

It's worth noting, re twitter's past-few-days topic, that this really isn't what the literature finds. Most healthy men are attracted to a range of women, FROM young but physically/sexually adult TO "MILFy." Women in their early 20s are seen as most attractive by everyone, but this was by .6 points (and they were seen as worse in bed). If you build up a stockpile of romantic, sexual, domestic, and financial memories with your husband, he isn't going to want to leave when you turn 30...or 40...or 50. Most male disgust with marriage traces very specifically to behavior - fading sex, lack of physical fitness (the average US woman is 5'4" and 170), constant argument - and not to appearance. I suspect the same is true for women, re modern men.

@Hitchslap1 It doesn’t make me angry, but it saddens me to think that lasting love might not be real and that someday I’ll “expire” in the eyes of my husband. It makes marriage seem like a bad deal

It occurs to me I don't hear that phrase any more. It's not something people say any more. I suspect it's not a practice people *do* any more. Our pets are no longer expected to be night prowlers.

From the ongoing cranky old man files.... I recall the common phrase "put the cat out". A Flintstones credit sequence from 1960 illustrates the concept: youtube.com/watch?v=WSF3CV…

I see the celebrations of Justice Thomas longevity on SCOTUS. Worth noting for the enthusiasts of his jurisprudence and its rise to control over the US legal system: Justice Thomas holds his seat thanks to President GHW Bush and Senators Danforth and Specter.

@MikeDrewWhat @olivertraldi Honestly, the right answer and the easy answer is to make congressional districts radically smaller and have the number of House members radically larger (6000+). Out of that, all true communities will be better represented.

@MikeDrewWhat @olivertraldi To the extent such a philosophy has merit, it will be damaged if it is abused to support districting by race through a slight of hand of replacing race language with "community" language.
