What I noticed about Sneako is that his racial background is so thoroughly mixed that no single group feels like a natural home, he can't settle into one identity and claim it as his own, no matter how much he might want to. So religion becomes the entire foundation of his belonging, the one axis of identity he can fully commit to. Most Christians and Muslims at least have a cultural and ethnic grounding that exists independent of their faith, something that would still be there if they stopped believing tomorrow. Sneako doesn't have that kind of fallback, so he is mentally unable to comprehend someone who wants to preserve their racial or ethnic heritage.
