The management of the hills had dried the peat out underneath and it caught fire readily making the fire worse. I am not saying the are not issues we need to look at on rewilded land too but it is simply not true that muirburn ‘prevents fires’ or is a firebreak. nature.com/articles/s4156…

More visitors to the garden pond! This looks like a pair of Common Darter dragonflies (Sympetrum striolatum). The behaviour you see of them dipping into the water is the female depositing her eggs. The red male holds onto her throughout the process to guard her against other males.

So many benefits: Water-cleaner, slower to run off and flood. Soil-enriched, more fertile. Life-biodiversity explosion. Resilience-less erosion, less landslip, less vulnerable to fire and disease. Amenity-the beauty and the species bring tourism abd £

@monkeyhorsedawg @uamh1 The ‘management’ of the muirburned hills in the Dava fire had dried the peat below and when this caught fire it burned releasing 85% percent of the fire’s emissions. nature.com/articles/s4156…

There is an anti-rewilding Facebook group currently enjoying a chat about how they hope the beavers in Cairngorms have been burnt to death by the wildfire. I despair.

What actually stops wildfires becoming catastrophic? Prof. Stefan Doerr of Swansea University, speaking on @BBCr4today: "We have to accept the fact that we will have more fires in the future. But there is also a lot we can do… making sure that these fires do not reach this size and do not have the impact that they are having now." His solution is land management — cutting the fuel that turns a manageable fire into an extreme one: "It is about the management of the land: basically stopping the fuel… from accumulating to the level that we see now in some areas." That means grazing, mowing — and burning: "We can have more grazing in some areas, which would reduce the fuel, and possibly make more use of burning — prescribed fire — or mowing to reduce the amount of fuel in the landscape." And on the fear that burning does harm: "Prescribed fires, if they are carried out well, are not particularly damaging. They may seem damaging because the landscape is black, but it will green up very quickly. It will reduce the accumulation of a lot of fuel that could lead to a more severe fire." This is the case we make every day. Managing fuel loads is how we protect the communities, carbon and habitats that a severe wildfire would destroy.

@OptimumUFH Muirburn does not create firebreaks as our largest fire last year on Dava proved. It was over a managed grouse moor.

Yet again ridiculous propaganda to fit an agenda. No mention of the fact the UK’s biggest ever fire on Dava moor was on yep, you guessed it, traditionally managed Grouse Moorland. Not an environmentalist re wilder in sight.

@OptimumUFH There is currently no requirement for firebreaks on rewilding land. Perhaps there should be but to be clear there are no firebreaks on any of our farming or shooting hills. Muirburn does not act as a firebreak.
