This Muharram, please reflect on the philosophy of Soren Kierkegaard, the father of existentialism, mapped through the lens of freedom, resignation and anxiety. A THREAD;

@LeftArmAround @PakCricFanatik Agreed, it’s a race to the bottom for mediocrity. However Ramiz was given a couple of tests to captain and then rightfully told to get bent because he was so bad. Shan is diabolical and the amount of rope he’s been given is staggering

@PakCricFanatik @RezaAli1980 I’ll give him some credit for the knock vs NZ. But then again you can also find the odd flutters like that in Shan’s career. At the end of the day, both are privileged shit players who have got to play a lot more than their mediocre talents deserved

@TeslaOnDiet Couldn’t agree more, but the Ali Shariati view that it needed to drift away from a Religion of Mourning to a Religion of Martyrdom, always resonates.

Someday I’ll write properly about how Shia Islam is the perfect container for a nervous system carrying intense grief. It’s the only standing religion where grief isn’t suppressed or transcended but ritualized through collective practices.
R.@TeslaOnDiet

Yes, it’s definitely more internally consistent and historically accurate, but I think the real reason I finally figured out this was the one for me is that I had so much grief and so strong a sense of justice inside me that I needed a clear story, with a hero and a villain, to base my life around. And an outlet for grief.

I have been working in public hospitals for a long time now. I remember some years back,Surah Rahman was recited in every ward after Fajar prayers. There used to be pin drop silence, and only the verses glorifying the miracles and creations of Almighty were heard. But as time passed, this practice stopped. And today's the time of the most humiliation and disgrace. There's no silence every during Azaan but only 'Agar ap se koi bahar se dawai lanay k lye kahay ya ap se pese mangay to 1033 per fori rabta karain" echoing every nook and corner.

Yes, cats really do clock the difference. The wiring behind it is mammal-wide and ancient, and Konrad Lorenz mapped it back in 1943. Lorenz, an Austrian biologist, noticed that babies of pretty much every mammal look kind of similar. Big head, big eyes set low on the face, small nose, chubby cheeks. He called it the baby schema. Any face hitting those proportions trips a switch in the brain’s reward circuit. Same circuit that fires when you eat something delicious or hear your favorite song. Oxford researchers nailed down the timing in 2008. Using a brain scanner that tracks activity down to the millisecond, they showed that adults’ reward circuits light up in roughly a seventh of a second when a baby’s face appears. All before you’ve consciously processed who you’re looking at. It also works across species. Swiss researchers showed in 2013 that just looking at puppy faces for a few minutes shifts how cute adults then rate human baby photos. The brain is using the same wiring to judge cuteness in both. Stand baby chimps, gorillas, orangutans, and human babies side by side and they all share the same proportions: rounder face, bigger eyes lower in the head. Mammals are born with this response. Now add sound. Cats hear high pitches that humans can’t reach. Their best hearing range happens to be where kitten distress calls live, and right where the harshest pitches of a human baby’s cry land. Both sounds pull on the same alarm. Researchers writing in Nature in 2023 traced the exact brain pathway in mice that releases oxytocin, the bonding hormone, when a mother hears her pups cry. The hearing region of the brain wires straight into the part that controls hormones, and similar wiring shows up across mammals. So when a cat sits next to a toddler and stays calm, the explanation runs back hundreds of millions of years. Soft thing, big head, high-pitched noises, do not attack.

Meanwhile, if one can look beyond blind rhetoric, with no substance, this explains what exactly is the problem, and how it can be solved. Important caveat here that you need an IQ higher than room temperature to understand the same: rogueonomist.github.io/Pakistan_RLNG_…

If he is left with an ounce of honour, Awais Leghari must seriously consider to step down at 3:30 pm presser today. He is a failure like many other cabinet members who merely are serving self-and-gang interests - destroying the goodwill created by PM Shahbaz, FM Asim & DPM Dar.

She was supposed to attend a Daniel Craig film premiere in London that weekend. Instead, she was in a Belfast hospital with 39 separate injuries. She was 29 years old. Winnie M Li was a Harvard graduate and a George Mitchell Scholar who had co-produced a short film shortlisted for an Oscar. She flew to Belfast for a conference. The day before she was supposed to fly home, she decided to squeeze in a solo hike through a forest park on the western edge of the city. A 15-year-old boy followed her in and raped her in broad daylight. She later said she went from being a confident woman to a ghost, with PTSD and depression so severe she had to give up her film career. Her attacker was sentenced to 8 years. He was out in 4. Hiking had been one of her great joys before the attack. It took years before she could do it alone again. In 2009, she forced herself to backpack through Southeast Asia for three months, trying to find the person she used to be. Five and a half years after the assault, she sat down and started writing about what happened to her. Her novel Dark Chapter, built from her own experience, won a major literary prize. Her second novel was fought over by five US publishers and picked by The New York Times for their book club. She co-founded a festival in London dedicated to conversations about sexual violence, and earned a PhD from the London School of Economics studying how survivors use their voices to reclaim their stories. And every year, on the exact anniversary of the worst day of her life, she goes on a solo hike. In her own words: to remind herself that beauty still exists, and she can enjoy it. This year was year 18. She walked the Southwest Coast Path along England's coastline, and the photos show her smiling on a cliff in Cornwall. After 17 years of doing this, she said the nausea and anxiety on the anniversary are finally gone. That took 17 years, but she got there. I have nothing to add to her story except this. If you are in the middle of your own recovery and it feels like it will never end, her 18 years of annual walks say otherwise.
Winnie M Li@winniemli

18 yrs ago, I was violently assaulted & raped while walking alone. Every year on the anniversary of that day, I go on a solo hike to remind myself that there is still beauty in this world & I can enjoy it. This yr, I pushed myself & did a few days of the Southwest Coast Path…

Obviously early days but so much assurance and finesse from the Pakistani leadership in hosting and executing these talks. Genuinely feel like an adult in the room which is so antithetical to Pakistan.
