Excited to begin my new position as a @FormasForsk research fellow today! I will study the potential of #floodplain reconnection and #StageZero #riverrestoration in the UK, Sweden and USA. A new direction, new collaborators and many new ideas! Interested? Get in touch!

'Rebalancing' lateral connectivity is key to river management! I'm excited about our new paper in which we review lateral connectivity between riverscapes and landscapes across disciplines. We hope its useful to both river managers and academics. Link: shorturl.at/ri3lA

The @nationaltrust River Aller Stage Zero restoration getting the attention it deserves. A 1800% increase in aquatic habitat! Ft. our work @umeauniversity together with @UoNGeography @DrMFJohnson & @UniofExeter @AlanPuttock & others. Funded by @FormasForsk & @BSG_Geomorph

‘The ecological equivalent of a complete reboot.’ @BBCJustinR on @BBCr4today earlier, on @nationaltrust project to rewiggle a river. Scientists say it’s resulted in ‘an explosion of life.’ We’ll need a lot more wiggle in our rivers for an ecological recovery.

Always great to get the opportunity to present research, this time at the @BSG_Geomorph 2024 conference in Loughborough, talking about recent analogue experiments undertaken @GeosciencesR assessing the impact of sediment supply and baseball fall rate on knickpoint morphology!

First ever conference presentation done! Such a pleasure to chat river restoration at the BSG Annual Conference - what a friendly bunch of geomorphologists 😄

@CU_EARTH @WillNorrissGeog @GIStuart @dschillereff @octria91 @DrLucyClarke @GeomorphicJosh Great talk by @lucyjanedaniels on her PhD project, looking at how the Allt Lorgy River responds to forest restoration approaches over the last decade. Looking forward to seeing how your project unfolds!🌳

@tom_galia @umeauniversity @FluvialSweden Yeah all good questions! Spawning habitat seems to be a bottleneck for suffering salmonid populations. But gravel addition is also very expensive and often eroded so aim (of course) needs to be restoring underlying geomorphic processes that maintain spawning beds

@RiccoMason @umeauniversity @FluvialSweden Thanks, I know your paper :) Well, it depends... If there were salmon in the past (before damming/timber floating), how did they deal with limited spawning sites? But I agree with the addition of gravel since it helps to compensate for other damages to rivers caused by human.

The Vindelälven catchment is one of the largest protected areas in Europe, but highly modified for timber floating We've been studying spawning gravels, combining drones and field surveys to inform a more sustainable restoration/ gravel augmentation strategy. @umeauniversity
