Some thoughts.
Firstly, Gouws used taboo words to emphasize a point about … racism. The intent of what he was saying was not to be racist, it was in fact clearly a statement against racism unfortunately phrased in a way designed to shock by using racial slurs illustratively.
Secondly, we forget how much “cancel culture” has grown since 2010. It was not, pre the BLM era, and the growing hypersensitivity around race issues, entirely taboo to merely utter a word in the context of discussion when not intended as an insult. In fact, the phrase “cancel culture” did not even exist in 2010.
Thirdly, it should be obvious that whoever disseminated this video and the previous “milder” one would have had these clips for a long time prior to this election. It should be clear by now that the release of these has been carefully timed to maximize disruption of the GNU, annihilate Gouws and smear the DA.
Sadly, there will be no mature, measured, debate on this. It is obvious that Gouws is finished politically, and no amount of discourse will make any difference to the baying masses that only see that a white man said the K word and the N word and so he must be a typical white racist. Context is irrelevant to them.
Finally, it strikes me that real enemy here is the sophisticated forces that so carefully timed and manipulated these revelations to destabilize not only the fledgling GNU but the country as a whole. We should be asking questions about where this is coming from.
