One week down… and what an amazing first week it’s been! 🚛
Looking back over the last few days, it’s amazing just how much variety this job has to offer. Every shift has been completely different and that’s one of the things I’m enjoying the most. You genuinely never know what the next phone call is going to bring.
This week has taken me from attending breakdowns on busy motorways, where traffic is travelling at high speed just feet away, to recovering vehicles from quiet country lanes where every job presents its own unique challenges. Whether it’s helping a stranded motorist, attending an accident recovery or transporting a customer’s pride and joy, no two recoveries are ever the same.
It’s certainly a world away from securing a load of kegs! This week I’ve been learning the fundamentals of vehicle recovery, including the basics of winching, safely securing vehicles onto the recovery bed and using the spec lift. Every recovery is different, so every job requires you to think ahead, adapt to the situation and make sure everything is carried out safely.
Even the daily vehicle checks are completely different to what I’m used to. Alongside the usual walk-around checks, I’ve been learning the importance of ensuring the PTO is fully operational so the flatbed and spec lift function correctly, checking the warning beacons are working properly and making sure all of the recovery equipment is ready for whatever the day might bring. It’s a completely different way of thinking, but one I’m thoroughly enjoying.
One thing that has really stood out to me is the knowledge and experience within the team. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming, patient and always willing to explain not only how things are done, but why they’re done that way. That support has made learning a completely new side of the industry both enjoyable and rewarding.
After just one week, I can honestly say I’m loving every minute of it. Every shift brings a new challenge, another lesson and another opportunity to develop my skills. I’m looking forward to continuing to learn from such an experienced team and seeing what the weeks ahead have in store.
Here’s to week two! 🚛💨

@AlistairCarns Al, it’s very rare to see politicians who you can easily relate to. You sir are one. The people of selly oak are lucky to have you 👍🏻

I had a good conversation with the Chief Whip today where she offered me a return to government. After careful thought, I declined, with respect and with thanks.
I resigned in June because I did not believe the defence funding on the table was adequate for the threats this country faces. I said so publicly and I still stand by every word.
I've always said I would serve where I am asked. In normal circumstances, that is exactly what I would do, but the argument I resigned over has not yet been settled. To take another role now, in another department, would suggest that it has. Until the country is spending what it needs to spend on its own defence, my job is to keep making that case, honestly and constructively, from the backbenches.
The appointment of John Healey as Chancellor changes the picture in one important respect. John resigned for the same reasons I did. He is a man of his word and he has made it clear that he will deliver on the commitments that led him to leave government in the first place. The Prime Minister knows exactly what John stands for and that appointment is meaningful and I welcome it.
The people around the Cabinet table and across government are doing difficult jobs in a difficult moment and I will do everything I can from the backbenches to help our party and country succeed. Where I believe more needs to be done, I'll keep making that case in good faith.
There is also serious work to be done on Northern Ireland Legacy, opportunities for young people, getting the country fitter and healthier, and I will keep pushing on all of that too. That's the job of a backbench MP and I take it seriously.
Birmingham Selly Oak sent me here to deliver for them and that is where my focus remains... 🫡🫡

Well today has been interesting. It started with a message from home that the fridge had exploded during the night...well a bottle of Pepsi did! Have our pet sitter and the dogs a real fright...
Then we had parking issues at our Airbnb...causing havoc as we didn't have the resident permit and then the police were called 🤦♀️ (after my superb parking too lol)
Let's hope tomorrow is less dramatic!

Welcome to the world, our beautiful little one ❤️
Today at 5:51pm, our little bundle of joy arrived weighing a healthy 7lb 13oz, and honestly, we couldn’t feel more blessed.
Firstly, I have to say how incredible my wife, Sinéad, has been. You were absolutely amazing, darling. I am so proud of you. Watching you bring our baby into the world was the most beautiful thing, and I love you more than words can ever say.
A massive thank you as well to the wonderful midwives, Jo and Sarah. You were both simply fantastic. Your kindness, care and support meant the world to us, and we’ll never forget it.
Mum is doing brilliantly, baby is doing well, and my heart is fuller than ever before.
Henry, Roma and Darla can’t wait to meet you, little one. You’ve already got the best big brother and sisters waiting for you.
Our family is complete. Four beautiful children, one very proud dad, and a whole lot of love.
Welcome to the world, little one. We love you endlessly.
BOSH ❤️👶🩵
