What Makes You Vote For Someone? Now that the primary is in full swing and many people are already voting, I wonder what it is that makes last-minute voters gravitate to one candidate over the other. I’m seeing a lot of ads with the candidate’s spouse talking about the more personal aspects of the candidate’s life. I like it. When I ran for office in 2008, I remember the ads came out in the last few weeks of the campaign. Mine were so stupid. Consultants sweep in with the same tired ideas and, being new to the industry, we followed their lead. Huge mistake. It was the same old elevator pitch, highlighting the most popular ideas, trying to get that last vote. I still have it and will link it for you to have a good laugh. youtu.be/u84B04038tw?si… Oh, here’s another typical bullshit ad. youtu.be/DI25M-Ogncg?si… I think one of the big problems with candidates, campaigns, and elections is consultants. I have some good friends in the industry, and I apologize now for offending you. I find that these strategists are often out of touch and still treating campaigns and people like they did 20 and 30 years ago. One of my favorite lines is “I’m not a politician.” I said that all the time because I was new to politics. But once you pay the entry fee, jump in the pit of vipers and start campaigning, you are technically a politician. This go around, I’m hearing the same thing from one candidate in particular who ran before and lost, and still, he is, in his own mind, not a politician. I’ve become a bit of a cynic. I’m looking for candidates who want to lead, not who want to be governor, senator, or legislator. There’s a big difference. I’ve followed a lot of elections, and towards the end find many of the candidates don’t sound as fresh and honest near the end as they did in the beginning. So, what is it that swings you one direction or the other? Do you follow the money? Do you plug your nose and vote party line? Do you listen to the media or pundits pronounce who is most likely to win? I’ve followed a lot of elections, and towards the end, I find many of the candidates don’t sound as fresh and honest near the end as they did in the beginning.
