My husby and I went out to dinner last night, and the bill came out to $200. I left a $50 tip on the table, thinking that was pretty reasonable. I’ve just checked my student finance for a nice depressing read. I also left uni 10 years ago (first to come under Plan 2 🙃), with a debt of just under £40,000. After a decade of repayments, it’s now reached… £48,905! In 2025-26, 70% of my repayments were wiped out by interest added.

The price they pay wholesale changes daily so they have to adjust daily because all nearby competition does. Sometimes they are making more profit/gal and sometimes losing more profit/gal depending on wholesale price changes until their tank is empty. When wholesale price drops they have to drop their price to match competitors and they have less profit until their tank is empty. If they held the price high everyone would flock to lower priced gas station and they’d lose sales. But when wholesale price rises and every store around raises prices they are making more profit until their tank is empty. Sometimes they profit more sometimes less.

Why do gas stations have up to a 25-cent price increase or decrease almost every other day? The same fuel in the tanks, priced at $2.64 yesterday, is now $2.89.

I’m in the low end of 55-64 bracket and have done min cont to 401k to get company match for last 31 years. My starting wage in 1994 was $31K/year and my current 401k balances (including rollover IRAs) are more than 5 times the median. In 7 1/2 yrs at age 65, my projected balance will be 7 to 8 times (or more) the median in that chart (using very conservative 4% to 6% growth). I lived first in MI for 28 yrs and now in ND for 13 yrs so was never in a high COA area. And this is my 7th job in that time frame. You can win with a 401k if you contribute enough to get company match and stay in a job long enough to be fully vested. I have been fully vested for 3 of those 7 jobs.
