@luke_mccown It doesn’t seem like you understand my question bc you keep answering questions that I didn’t ask. I don’t want to keep pushing it so we can just leave it there. Thanks for the response and God bless.

Why is my understanding based on interpretation? You and I are different are here, I do not believe the Bible in some code or mystery that needs to be interpreted at every turn of the page. If your questions are genuine, and you genuinely want to know what’s right about the scriptures.. Here’s my belief: that you should go read it for yourself, ask God, genuinely, to show you how to live through and based on what you’ve read, then allow the Holy Spirit of God to lead you to do exactly as you have read

This message is not to the unbelievers.. it’s to the “Christians”, those followers of The Way that are upset when a man says exactly what THE SCRIPTURES say. If you call HIM Lord, and you’ve read and understood His word.. then what’s the problem.

@luke_mccown Your understanding is based on your interpretation. Understand is a synonym of interpret, so you’re in a contradiction. You admit that your understanding (interpretation) has been wrong and in some cases still is. My question is how do you when your understanding is right/wrong

I don’t believe the Bible as a whole requires interpretation. I don’t interpret the Bible, I read what it says. Can my understanding be wrong, absolutely! And has been and in some cases still is I’m sure. I understand the difference between prescriptive for humanity and descriptive to humanity. I don’t believe there is a “ read between the lines” necessarily. I believe the main things are the plain things. Denominations are built on different doctrine, how and what things are taught. I believe as Christians regarding the scriptures, We should have Unity in the essential elements of our faith -the plain things of scripture regarding sin, salvation, God the father, the perfect sinless crucified, now risen and alive God-man Jesus, his holy authoritative Word, his virgin birth .. to name a few… Liberty in the non-essentials- the things that don’t pertain necessarily to the things listed above (here is where denominations usually, perhaps even mostly differ) But in all things Grace.

@Suhtiwdog @luke_mccown “One man is correct… or both men are wrong.” Lol exactly, so again, how can we know which is which? What is or isn’t contradictory to the rest of scripture is also dependent on personal interpretation. Circular argument.

🤔 One man is correct… or both men are wrong. Depends which interpretation is indeed from the Holy Spirit who is infallible and won’t deliver contradictory interpretations nor anything contrary to the rest of scripture. Can an interpretation of scripture be infallible? Yes, when it comes from the same sovereign God responsible for the original inspiration and the continued preservation of His word. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@luke_mccown The Bible as a whole requires interpretation. If the meaning of scripture was self evident then there wouldn’t be so many Christian denominations. Is your interpretation of scripture infallible? Is everyone who disagrees with you wrong?

I appreciate the question. But it feels as if the question assumes that the scriptures have to be interpreted, as if what it says is somehow not exactly what it means. I believe the Bible tells us plainly what it means. That doesn’t mean there isn’t poetry that requires interpretation or some amount of symbolism as is the case in Revelation. But the Bibles instructions for how we are to live are indeed normative and authoritative. The Bible says “ all scripture is God breathed and useful for teaching, correcting and training” (2 Tim 3:16 ) “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only…” (James 1:22) “If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.” (John 13:17) “Walk in it…” (Jeremiah 6:16) Again the Bible has been so critically studied ( and by both supporters and detractors) with a large majority of those that have studied it critically saying it means what the writers of it said and it says what it means.

@Suhtiwdog @luke_mccown We both put our trust in Christ and the Holy Spirit to guide us, and we both have a community of many brethren to hold us accountable and to pray with. Does that entail that our interpretation of scripture is infallible, and anyone who has a different interpretation is wrong?

🤔 Cool. And I think the Spirit and scripture is infallible. As for interpretation, there are a number of factors to consider. If we’ve examined ourselves and have tested our faith and the Spirit, making our calling and election sure, doing by faith in accordance with will of God through the help of the Spirit all those things required of us, then I think we can trust our interpretation if we are trusting Christ. If we are wrong due to our carnality or spiritual immaturity, then we have the more mature Spirit-filled brethren we can trust to gently correct us, as iron sharpens iron. Again, if the interpretation isn’t producing holy living, Christ-likeness, spiritual maturity, fruits of the Spirit, peace and unity and edification of the believers and the Body, then it’s probably not the correct (or incorrectly applied) interpretation. 🤷🏻‍♂️

🤔 When people lean on their own understanding, or are grappling with verses they’re still too carnal or spiritually immature to receive, yes. But all a believer needs to interpret correctly and live a holy life pleasing to God is trust in Christ and the Holy Spirit to guide them, and a community of the many brethren to hold them accountable and to pray with. They will correctly interpret what they need to become more Christ-like day by day. The only true authority of correct interpretation is the Holy Spirit who inspired Spirit-filled believers to record God’s living and active word. I do think there’s little left to say unless there is some point you’d still like to make. 🤷🏻‍♂️

🤔 At the least, prayer, personal application, and time for evidence… Also, possibly, helpful discourse and friendly debate. Jesus gives us peace that doesn’t trouble our hearts and joy that surpasses all understanding. I’d say if an interpretation troubles the heart and generates less peace, it’s probably the lesser of the two interpretations. But I personally and truly believe that God leaves some non-salvific issues up for interpretation, in part, to test our faith in how we love and accept and edify one another even when we disagree. 🤷🏻‍♂️

🤔 Not exactly. You originally asked how a person can know they’re correctly interpreting what they’re reading. My answer came from scripture: we can know that, if we have the Holy Spirit, therefore the mind of Christ, we have everything we need to discern truth and judge all things correctly… for the Spirit teaches us all things and guides us into all truths. Scripture also says that true wisdom, knowledge, and understanding come from God. It also says that without the Spirit, we are incapable of understanding even the message of the cross, which is foolishness to those who are perishing. And to those being saved by the gospel, there are some deeper truths that may still not yet be received because, though they have the Spirit, they are still too carnally minded and spiritually immature. Scripture warns to not lean on our own understanding but to trust God with our whole hearts and to acknowledge Him in all our ways. So does every believer have the correct interpretation? Clearly not when we see there are so many disagreements and divisions over interpretations within the Body of believers. (But many of those, I personally suspect, are likely just believers leaning on their own understandings to posture and win debates and make lots of noise… especially when their interpretations don’t produce fruit but instead are divisive and generate strife, are truth without brotherly love, correction without gentleness, lacking a pursuit towards peace and edification.) But to have a correct interpretation: trust Christ, lean on the Holy Spirit for understanding, be a doer of what you hear from what you read, and gather together regularly with other believers — leveraging what the Spirit has taught them after, of course, searching the scriptures for yourself to see if those lessons are true. Finally, if the interpretations aren’t producing fruit in keeping with repentance and salvation, if they’re not shaping you to become more Christ-like, being holy as He is holy, and loving God and others… then it’s probably not the correct interpretation or a mis- or non-application of what the Spirit is teaching you. Bottom line: trust Christ, receive the Spirit, read scripture, obey what you’re made to understand. God will direct your path, help you in your weaknesses, and grow you spiritually. Not only does He bear fruit through our faith, but He works in us to will and to do what pleases Him. He uses the Bible and the Spirit to equip us for the good works He has prepared in advance for us to do. Even if there are some things we don’t yet understand or trust as correctly being interpreted, nevertheless, trust Christ. 🤷🏻‍♂️

🤔 By having the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of you. When we trust in Christ after hearing the word of truth, the gospel of our salvation, we not only receive the gift of salvation through faith, but also the gift of the Holy Spirit taking up residence inside of us. He teaches us all things and guides us into all truth. Here are the verses in case it helps. 🤷🏻‍♂️ ✍️ “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” - Ephesians 1:13-14 ✍️ “But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.” - Romans 8:9 ✍️ “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” - John 14:26 ✍️ “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.” - John 16:13

🤔 The true interpretation comes from the Holy Spirit. That is the point I’m trying to make with those verses in an attempt to answer your question. When you have “the mind of Christ” you can discern truth and correctly judge all things. Sorry if that’s not a sufficient answer for you. 🤷🏻‍♂️

🤔 “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.” - I John 2:20, 27 ✍️ “But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.” - I Corinthians 2:10, 12-13, 15-16 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks for the question. The Bible is the most read, critically studied, cross referenced, picked apart, translated, and written about book in human history… you don’t have to search very far or look very hard to find resources to hep you know ( and understand) exactly what it says, all the way down to the original languages.. Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic. I studied, referenced and cross referenced it for 20+ yrs of my life… it’s not hard to understand
