WHY STUDYING BIOSCIENCES IN NIGERIA IS NOT USELESS, EVEN THOUGH MANY PEOPLE THINK SO - AND WHAT YOU CAN DO AS A PASSIONATE GRADUATE IN BIOSCIENCES If you've studied biosciences or any other STEM course in Nigeria and are finding it difficult to navigate your career, especially because you're passionate about your field, please don't feel discouraged. And don’t let anyone tell you that you studied a useless course. Your discipline is, in fact, highly relevant. However, the country we find ourselves in has limited opportunities for STEM-related fields. But there are ways to navigate this challenge. I studied microbiology because I was deeply passionate about infectious diseases and how we can tackle them by developing novel therapeutics and vaccines. In my first year, I realized that due to occupational gatekeeping and regulatory exclusion, bioscientists, including microbiologists, struggle to work in hospitals, particularly in clinical diagnostics. This is not the standard practice in other countries, and I argue that this restriction stifles biomedical research within Nigeria and contributes to many preventable deaths. During my undergraduate studies, I sought relevant experience in other fields. My internship in veterinary microbiology and my undergraduate research in environmental microbiology helped me understand how human, animal, and environmental health are interconnected. Rather than chasing the wind in the medical sector, I pursued career opportunities in industries such as pharmaceuticals and food science, as well as public health and environmental sectors. I secured several job positions even before completing NYSC, thanks not only to my strong academic performance but also to my excellent communication and teamwork skills, as well as my ability to apply microbiological sciences beyond theoretical knowledge. After spending over two years in an environmental consulting firm and about a year in public health and food safety consulting, I earned multiple scholarships abroad. Most importantly, I was able to reconnect with my ambition of tackling infectious diseases through vaccine-based solutions, which led me to pursue the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters in Vaccinology. I have shared my journey in the hope that you can draw valuable lessons from it. In summary, how can you navigate challenges and explore your passion? - Stand out: The competition is stiff, so you must build relevant skills beyond academic grades. - Gain diverse experience: Look for opportunities in industries such as pharmaceuticals, food science, public health, and environmental microbiology. - Develop soft skills: Communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities are crucial for career growth. - Seek global opportunities: Apply for scholarships, internships, and research programs abroad. - Stay persistent: Challenges exist, but with determination and strategic planning, you can thrive in your field. Your degree is not useless. The system may be limiting, but with the right approach, you can carve a successful career path in biosciences.

And what have you done e secretly, that the Lord had instructed you to confess openly? What Restitution has the Lord told you to make that your Pride and Ego are still depriving you from making? If you are serving the Lord with Fear and Trembling, and you are Eagerly looking towards getting to Heaven peacefully, GO AND DO WHAT THE LORD TOLD YOU TO DO! If the Lord has told you to make Open Apology or Confession, You better go and do it now before it is too late. GETTING TO HEAVEN IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ALL YOUR PRIDE AND EGO! My Father, My Father! You have done well. You Once Said, “Tho more One is Getting to the Finishing Line, the more One must be very Careful” Yes, I got that!
