Curious, always.

Minimalistic captures are my jam, no matter the subject! Do I always shoot them? No… but any opportunity I get, I will. How do you turn “just a subject and no supporting background” into a great, appealing image? It’s all about letting simplicity do the heavy lifting. Here are my two go-to tips: 1) Shallow depth of field is your best friend. Open that aperture wide (f/4 or lower) so the background melts into a creamy, distraction-free blur. Your subject instantly pops and becomes the only thing the eye can focus on. 2) Hunt for clean lines and negative space. Look for a simple perch, branch, or edge (like this barbed wire) that adds just enough structure without clutter. Place your subject off-center and let the empty space breathe. This little Bullock’s Oriole on the fence Is the perfect example. Simple, quiet, and still full of life. Do you like these types of images?
