If this report is accurate, then Femi Gbajabiamila has just given Nigerians another ugly picture of how power works under Tinubu’s government. While ordinary police officers are risking their lives in unsafe communities, fighting criminals with poor welfare, poor equipment, and delayed career progression, some officers attached to politicians are allegedly being recommended for “special promotion” from the comfort of elite political circles. This is exactly the problem with Nigeria. The people who face bullets are forgotten. The people who guard politicians get special letters. The Police Service Commission exists for a reason. Promotion in the police should be handled through lawful procedure, merit, service record, discipline, performance, and institutional recommendation. It should not look like political patronage. It should not appear as if proximity to power is now stronger than professional service. Tinubu’s government keeps asking Nigerians to endure sacrifice, but the same government continues to show that sacrifice is mostly for ordinary citizens. For the elite, there is always a shortcut. For the connected, there is always a letter. For those close to power, there is always “special consideration.” That is why people are angry. If these officers performed extraordinary duties, let the proper police hierarchy and PSC processes prove it. Let the records speak. Let merit defend them. But when the Chief of Staff writes to request special promotion for officers working with politicians, Nigerians have every right to ask whether the police is becoming a private reward system for political loyalty. This is not how to build institutions. Femi should explain himself. Gbaja should stop treating public institutions like extension offices of political convenience. And Tinubu’s government must understand that every act of elite privilege deepens public resentment. A serious country rewards service, not closeness to power.
