There should be laws here preventing companies from laying off employees unless the company can show financial hardship. What do you mean you had record profit last year, but you're laying off 2,500 people? For what reason?

Kind of underrated element of how things are now is that all these science magazines that used to appeal to a general audience out of just being *interesting* now seem to force themselves to be *useful*. Much non-fiction writing bends this way too — it has to be pragmatic.

We had devastating cuts to @washingtonpost. Our health team of 14 lost 9 reporters yesterday despite it being listed as part of the Post’s new focus. But I still have my job. Along w/a core team, we are still dedicated to covering public health, holding the powerful to account.

I knew I wouldn't be able to outrun the wave of journalism layoffs forever, and yesterday it finally reached me. I was among the 300 journalists cut from the @washingtonpost , where I'd been thrilled to work for 25 years. It was a great run, with wonderful people. I'll miss it.
