What If a Temple Pond Could Help Save a Species? In Assam’s Biswanath district, an ancient temple is quietly leading a conservation revolution. With no fences or fanfare, the Nagshankar temple has become a safe haven for 13 freshwater turtle species, including some that were once thought extinct in the wild. Thanks to the temple’s sacred pond, local turtle guardians, and the powerful blend of faith and ecology, these gentle scavengers are making a comeback. Scroll down to see how a centuries-old tradition is helping turtles return to the wild → #TurtleConservation #Assam #NagshankarTemple #WildlifeIndia #FreshwaterTurtles #Biodiversity #KasoMitras #SaveTheTurtles

#JalShakti #NamamiGange #GangaRejuvenation #ModiGovernment

Acting on specific input on 15.06.24, a team of officers of DRI identified and intercepted one lady carrier, who was carrying species of Indian tent turtles and Indian roofed turtles from Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh) via train for delivery at Patna. She was found carrying 164 live turtles. The Indian tent turtles and Indian roofed turtles rescued in this case are protected species under Schedule-I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and are thereby provided the highest protection under law.

Happy World Crocodile Day. A huge sized male Gharial basks on the bank of river Chambal near the nesting site. Both parents take turns guarding the nest & later the nursery of hatchlings, though females do greater part of the job. @moefcc @rameshpandeyifs @uptourismgov

A moving , lovely tribute to AJT Johnsingh, guru to a generation of wildlifers, a field biologist par excellence. Rest in power..
Jairam Ramesh@Jairam_Ramesh

One of India's most distinguished field conservation biologists, Asir Jawahar Thomas Johnsingh, who hailed from Tamil Nadu has just passed away. His very name symbolised the glorious diversity of India. Over the decades, his various researches and writings have been deeply enriching. He tutored and mentored literally hundreds - at some count close to 400 - of youngsters who themselves have made and are making impactful contributions to conservation science, policy, programmes and practices. He contributed immensely to the building up of the Dehradun-based Wildlife Institute of India into a world-class institution. His magazine columns, mostly in Frontline, educated millions. Few have had AJT 's knowledge of India's natural heritage, biodiversity, forests and wildlife. During my tenure as Minister during 2009-11, he was someone who I turned to very frequently for advice and guidance, and I continued to benefit from our exchanges till very recently. I vividly recall our very first conversation sometime in early June 2009 when I asked him whether his initials stood for Advanced Jet Trainer since that is the well-known expansion of AJT. We became teacher-student immediately thereafter. Johnsingh's last book On Jim Corbett's Trail is an absolute delight. He will continue to be a source of inspiration and role model to all naturalists. He was a true gem - as reflected in his second initial, a name given by his parents no doubt as their tribute to the hero of their generation.

Waterholes are the perfect pool for tigress & her cubs to cool off in the sizzling afternoon heat. Here, a tigress quenched her thirst lying in her favourite pool somewhere in the forest of terai. Isn't it cool !! @ntca_india @DudhwaTR @moefcc @rameshpandeyifs @uptourismgov
