Rivian $RIVN CEO RJ Scaringe says the company expects to bring Tesla FSD-like supervised driving to its vehicles later this year, with eyes-off unsupervised driving targeted for next year. Speaking on the “Masters of Scale” podcast, Scaringe said Rivian’s supervised point-to-point system is designed to resemble Tesla $TSLA Full Self-Driving Supervised. The feature is expected to roll out across Gen 2 vehicles, including the upcoming R2 SUV. Scaringe said the next step would be unsupervised driving, where drivers could eventually take their attention off the road. Longer term, Rivian wants vehicles capable of operating with no one inside. The autonomy push comes as Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker highlighted Rivian’s R2 production ramp at its Normal, Illinois factory. Pritzker said the site, once owned by Mitsubishi and idle for years, is now helping create jobs and strengthen manufacturing in central Illinois. Scaringe framed autonomy as more than a convenience feature. He said it could unlock new business models over time, including robotaxis. Rivian has also partnered with Uber $UBER, with Scaringe saying Uber provides distribution scale while Rivian focuses on the underlying technology. The company’s current business still has major commercial exposure. More than half of Rivian’s first-quarter automotive revenue came from Amazon $AMZN fleet van sales.
