Recent achievement in the #AlKhatib trial in Koblenz, being the 1st Universal Jurisdiction trial on torture committed in #Syria. The amendment of the original indictment is setting a precedent for future cases of #SGBV being tried as #CrimesAgainstHumanity. #MyRoadMyJustice

And being a former detainee yourself makes it particularly difficult, as you know what's like in there and what they're being put through.

And it's not just my experience, countless families have gone through this. And for women who have family members who are detained, the impact of detention is felt on so many levels— social, emotional, and financial.

1/ @fadwa_mahmoud: Detention is a very harsh experience. A detainee is stripped of his/her humanity through torture, psychological terror, and the inhumane conditions of the detention center. S/he is stripped of all human rights.

3/ I am working with a number of women as experts, not victims, to fulfil our dream of reaching a political settlement based on accountability & retribution, & to bring all those who violated our rights to justice before legal and judicial bodies on Syrian land. - Thuraya Hejazi

2/ It also weakened their societal, economic and cultural status. In addition, it undermined the rule of law, contributed to spreading chaos and and creating impunity for perpetrators of violent crimes because of the power they hold as armed actors. #Syria #WomenAgainstINJUSTICE

1/As former detainee of the Syrian regime, I witnessed firsthand the acts of violence practiced in detention centres, & particularly against women. This violence, which was difficult for many to overcome, was a direct cause of increasing women's vulnerability. #WomensHistoryMonth

3/ Most have nowhere to go after their release. Since then, she has dedicated her time and life to support other women survivors of detention by providing PSS, support services as well as awareness-raising on access to justice.

2/ She was released through a prisoner’s exchange agreement and then forcibly displaced to Idleb. In the aftermath of her detention, Walaa couldn’t stop thinking about the many other women in prison being physically and psychologically tortured.

Today marks 10 years since the start of the uprising in #Syria. Our thoughts are with survivors, victims, their families & the thousands persons "disappeared". We'll continue to do our small part against the persisting impunity and be a supportive ally in Syria's way to justice.

As I address this Council today, I am reminded of the young women I left behind in prison and I wonder if they ever saw freedom again.

To have a loved one who’s detained or disappeared and not know their fate is like waking up one day and realizing you have lost a limb. I can tell you it is a growing pain, a pain unlike any other. #WomensHistoryMonth #Syria #SyrianRevolution #Syria10
