I've slashed my time on this site, but now it's time to finally leave @Twitter. At least until it is dramatically reformed. (Or I am). I don't think it's very good for peoples' mental health. Or society. Plus I have a 5 and a 6 year old, who I need to set an example to...

@BelugaLagoon Amazing news! Me and my family love you so much. Taking them all to Kelso. From there we are going to the HIghlands to search for eagles! You have enriched my life so much, I just want to say thank you! Is there a public email address that you ever have time to read?

Sagan's dictum: Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Here's an extraordinary claim: Having most teens use a consumer product for 5 hours every day that reduces the time they spend with friends, sleeping, or exercising, while exposing them to porn, violent imagery, sexual solicitations from unknown men, and constant interruptions is not harming them in any way. As the Surgeon General pointed out yesterday, we have no evidence that this claim is true. nytimes.com/2024/06/17/opi…

We built Sherwood to solve a huge problem: Our kids had no good options when it came to easy, accessible entertainment YouTube, Disney plus, even most books we were gifted… Our kids’ entertainment options were either: A) wildly over stimulating (any parent who has experienced a post-screen-time tantrum knows what I mean) Or B) full of hidden political or ideological programming (if you’re like me, you’re sick of kids being used as pawns to advance adult agendas) So Sherwood did away with all of that. Peaceful, wholesome media (shows, movies, ebooks, audiobooks) Thousands and thousands of titles All in one place With more added every day You can use code SYS35 to try it for 35% off Let’s make kids media great again

Smartphones aren’t ruining your kids’ mental health. Studies have found the link between screen time and depression to be negligible. This is one of many convenient myths we parents accept instead of digging deeper into complex behavioral issues. Keep reading for 3 more myths 👇

@toddkashdan @DrShaneMcL if there are doubts about the impartiality of ACBS research, and doubts about how PF is measured, where does that leave us in terms of an honest view of the appropriateness in training e.g. leaders in PF / CBS?

New meta-analysis on the effectiveness of ACT for treating depression by researchers who appear to have no conflicts of interest. Looks like we can't hand wave issues of study quality away, no matter how many RCTs there are. Ouch. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

@Work_Life_You @ProfThomasDixon @taniaclarke_ This is so interesting - do you have any suggestions as to the best measure of workplace wellbeing that parses out short term (but necessary) discomfort from longer-term aspects of wellbeing e.g. meaning, knowledge, expertise etc?

@ProfThomasDixon @taniaclarke_ My view based on workplace evidence is that 1) somethings can improve wellbeing, some performance & sometimes both 2) doing hard important things isn’t always fun so the ‘feeling good *& functioning well*’ is important 3) more likely to get wellbeing & performance with a plan

Today's reading -- this very interesting 2020 article by @taniaclarke_ on whether there is a "trade-off" or not between children's wellbeing and their academic attainment. Do recommend me other things I should read for evidence on this! journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.11…

The "anti-noise" movement is growing in leadership circles. "Noise" means all the unwanted sound & mental stimulation that gets in the way of our ability to do what matters to us in the world. Responses include "no email Fridays" & "no meeting Wednesdays: hbr.org/2022/05/how-to…
