I’m 41. At 26, I went on my first silent meditation retreat. Those 9 days shattered my beliefs, transformed my relationship with emotions, and redefined everything I thought I knew about reality. Here’s what happened, and how meditation could change your life too 🧵:

Ingram wants us to know that awakening is not about getting somewhere new or different. It’s about being here where you already are. When you stop seeking and shift into being, everything comes into focus. Eventually, you realize that the search itself was the struggle.

7/ “The endless search for something more is the very thing that obscures what’s already here.  Realization comes when you stop seeking and start fully experiencing the present moment."

Mainstream meditation wisdom often denies how tough the path can be, but Ingram puts it front and center. The 'Dark Night' can feel like your world is unraveling. But you’re peeling back layers of illusion to uncover the truth. Often, your biggest transformation happens here.

Information can get you started, but in the end, it’s a distraction from your actual experience. Theory won’t transform you. Practice will. Stop overthinking. Start practicing.

I thought that enlightenment meant everything would be sunshine and rainbows. But Ingram reminds us that it doesn’t erase pain or guarantee happiness. It’s about seeing reality clearly—joy, suffering, and everything in between—and letting go of the need to control it.

5/ “Enlightenment doesn’t mean constant happiness.  It’s about seeing the nature of experience clearly, accepting it fully, and finding peace in that understanding—not in changing what arises."

4/ “The 'Dark Night' refers to stages in meditation where deep insights into impermanence, suffering, and non-self can lead to intense emotional and psychological challenges.  It’s difficult but necessary for true awakening."

I thought I had meditation all figured out. Then I discovered Daniel Ingram’s controversial book, Mastering the Core Teachings of the Buddha. It shattered everything I thought I knew about the path to freedom. These 7 ideas could transform your practice and your life 🧵:

Ingram reminds you not to expect a clear, predictable path in your meditation. You’ll have moments of joy and moments of frustration. But when you look back over months or years, you’ll realize how fundamentally you’ve shifted. Keep showing up.

3/ “Progress in meditation is rarely linear.  You will have breakthroughs and setbacks, clarity and confusion.  The key is to keep practicing, no matter how the path twists and turns."

In the past, I saw meditation as an escape. But Ingram teaches that it’s all about seeing clearly. Your biggest shifts come from working with discomfort and facing reality fully. It’s not easy or always peaceful, but the freedom is worth it.

I thought that ‘enlightenment’ was some impossible state. But Ingram flips that idea on its head. Enlightenment is already here, hidden beneath the normal noise and habits of your mind. The question is: are you willing to look closely enough to see it?

If I were new to meditation, here’s what I’d do: ~ Read Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind, and Mindfulness in Plain English. ~ Use those methods for at least 30 minutes of daily practice; no excuses. ~ Repeat for a year (or more). Don’t underestimate how life-changing this could be.
