Research suggests that roughly one in five CEOs display clinically meaningful psychopathic traits, figures that closely resemble those observed within prison populations. Findings presented at the Australian Psychological Society annual congress highlight a striking pattern in senior leadership: around 21% of high-level professionals exhibit these traits. This is far higher than the estimated 1%–4% seen in the general population. Often described as “successful psychopaths,” such individuals can rise to top positions by relying on charm, confidence, and persuasive personalities. Yet those same characteristics, paired with low empathy and a tendency toward manipulation can increase the risk of unethical decision-making and long-term harm to organisations. According to forensic psychologist Nathan Brooks, who led the research with colleagues from Bond University and the University of San Diego, hiring practices may play a role. Many companies prioritise experience and technical ability while overlooking problematic personality traits. The study argues that introducing stronger personality assessments into recruitment could help organisations avoid leaders who achieve short-term gains at the expense of long-term stability and ethical standards.
