@Vera_Icona_23 @kimahesse EDT is perfect for Eastern Maine. But yes, if we stayed on standard time instead, Caribou’s earliest sunrise would be 3:37 AM and latest sunset only 7:30 PM

@RobWrightImages @kimahesse Especially Eastern Maine which really is in the wrong Time Zone in terms of latitude It should be on Atlantic Time

@ItsSteveBee What I would like to see happen is state governments in areas on the western edges of time zones essentially go to standard only which would put their AM/PM balance in line with ours. Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, places like that.

Btw one thing about Arizona is they’re further west in their time zone than New England (especially Maine) which means standard time for them gives a better balance of morning and afternoon daylight, unlike here. We’d be lopsided in favor of mornings (which all comes down to personal preference). Morning people would love it. Not morning people would hate it.

@RobWrightImages Yeah, I’d rather Standard Time, like Arizona, Indiana and a couple other places do. It would allow us to not do that silly clock dance twice a year, but be a better result.

@JeffRemmers That’s a HARD pass for me. I’d rather keep switching clocks than never see a sunset past 7:30 PM again.

@patkellyd I’ll be interested to see what changes are made to school start times, etc. Why do we think we can change the clocks but can’t change when kids go to school? The arbitrary nature of what can and can’t be changed is wild.

@RobWrightImages Totally agree, those very late sunrises will be tough on school kids and others commuting in the pitch dark.

@RogerWMTW Ironic, when you think about it. A damaging event well to our west is preventing damage from occurring on a wider scale here (he says, not completely writing off the overnight convection).

Storm #1 never came together today due to the smoke and cloudiness. Tonight, Storm #2 still has plenty of juice out ahead of it and will be watched through the evening. Overall, confidence in the forecast is low. "Missing" would be a good thing, as we don't need damaging storms.

HRRR model runs for 7 PM for smoke in the atmosphere. First frame was Monday morning, second frame was Monday afternoon, third frame was Monday evening. The model had increased smoke in the atmosphere over our area since last night but struggled with how it would affect storms.

HRRR model runs for 7 PM beginning Sunday night through the most recent run at 5 PM today. The effects of the wildfire smoke appear to be significant today.

The sharp gradient of this super thick atmospheric wildfire smoke and clearer skies is going to be wild to see tomorrow. It'll sink south throughout the day.

No filter needed… thick wildfire smoke meant you could see the sun disk with the naked eye earlier this afternoon. A quick exposure on my telephoto lens gives you this photo of the sun. — July 14, 2026 South Berwick, Maine
