Roughly 30 million birds crossed Wisconsin last night during migration, and around 3:40 am, there were nearly 50 million birds in the air.
Bird migration time is peaking around this time of year, so keep the lights off overnight to help them fly safely.

The recently begun (within past 2 hours) episode 47 of Kilauea fountaining already has produced several spectacular whirls, including this one.
As northeast winds impinge on the hot, dense eruptive column, the airflow can’t blow through the molten rock, so it partly splits around it and partly rises into the extreme hot-gas plume. Then the real fun begins: pyro-vortices! It’s a hybrid process between dust devils and wildfire whirls.
Sometimes a vortex forms on one side or the other in that horizontal shear, on the extremely hot ground, and stretches deeply up in the heat low with its rising air. Sometimes you’ll see evidence of counter-rotating vortices on both sides (cyclonic behind, anticyclonic in front). Sometimes a wake vortex forms behind (left) of the fountain that could be rotating either direction, loosely akin to the Von Karman vortices in the wake of islands (but then stretched up in the rising hot air).
Fun with both volcanic eruptions and atmospheric vortices at the same time!
