Through a $9.75M investment from the federal government, matched by the City of Toronto, residents can now enjoy the newly completed phase 1 of the East Don Trail—a scenic route along the Don River, stretching from the Lower Don to Bermondsey Road. Great news for cyclists, hikers, nature enthusiasts, and residents across Toronto: phase 1 of the East Don Trail is now complete! Pleased to join members of Toronto City Council and @TRCA_HQ for today’s official opening. Supported by a $9.75M federal investment, matched by the City of Toronto, the trail is a key connection route in the Don Valley network, making it easier than ever to explore, enjoy, and stay active in the Don Valley.

As the site of the first Pride gathering in Canada in 1971, Hanlan’s Point Beach has always been a safe space for the 2SLGBTQI+ community. Happy to meet with Friends of Hanlan’s to discuss how to ensure Hanlan’s Point is protected for future generations.

Today marks 31 years since the Srebrenica Genocide. Last year on July 11, I visited the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial in Bosnia and Herzegovina to honour the memory of the victims and pay respect on behalf of the Government of Canada. Today we reflect, mourn, and stand in solidarity with the Bosnian community in Canada and around the world. Remembrance is the key to lasting peace.

Through the Groceries and Essentials Benefit, a family of four will receive up to $1,890 this year. Our government is making sure those most affected by rising costs—including nearly 5 million residents in Ontario—can afford everyday essentials and get ahead.

Canada is committed to advancing human rights and working with civil society partners to support those at risk. It was a pleasure to meet with Michael Bruce of the PRIDE Centre, based in Nairobi, Kenya. We discussed the challenges facing 2SLGBTQI+ refugees and displaced persons across Africa, and the importance of protecting the rights, dignity, and safety of vulnerable 2SLGBTQI+ communities.

Honoured to host a farewell luncheon for the Ambassador of Japan to Canada, H.E. Kanji Yamanouchi, who is ending his tenure in Ottawa. Throughout his time in Canada, and as Dean of the Indo-Pacific Diplomatic Corps, he tirelessly championed the Canada-Japan relationship. He arrived to deliver on the 2022 Canada-Japan Action Plan, and leaves as our two countries have just launched an ambitious Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Roadmap. We wish him all the best in his next chapter.

When parents can access affordable, high-quality child care, they can build a better future for their families. That’s why our government is making an additional $5.4B investment over two years to help keep child care fees stable and affordable for families.

All levels of government are working together to make housing more affordable in Toronto. Through federal and provincial funding, the City of Toronto will substantially reduce development charges over the next three years—lowering construction costs, boosting the housing supply, and making it easier for residents of Toronto, & Don Valley West, to buy a home.

Canada’s next submarine fleet will secure our coastlines and waters, and create massive new opportunities for Canadian industries and workers.

The Canada-US relationship tells a story: our relationship is built on deep people-to-people ties, strong economic connections, and a long history of working together to advance our shared interests. Especially during times of challenge, maintaining open dialogue and strong relationships matters. I look forward to continuing to work with our American partners to strengthen the cooperation that benefits people on both sides of the border and contributes to a more secure and prosperous North America.
